Lot #145449

This 1959 Jaguar Mk I was acquired by the seller in 2023 as a non-running project from its prior owner of approximately forty years. Subsequent work involved overhauling the carburetors and distributor, replacing ignition and braking components, replacing the wheels and tires, and changing fluids. Power is provided by a 3.4-liter inline-six linked with a three-speed automatic transmission, and the car is finished in white over black leather upholstery. Equipment includes rear wheel spats, four-wheel disc brakes, 15″ wire wheels, front and rear bench seats, a heater, and wood veneer trim. This Mk I is now offered at no reserve with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, an operating handbook, partial service records, spare parts, and a Virginia title in the seller’s name.

The car left the factory finished in Cream and is said to have been repainted at some point under prior ownership. Equipment includes a Leaper hood ornament, a pop-up cowl vent, fender-mounted side mirrors, wheel spats, and chrome wraparound bumpers with overriders as well as a chrome grille, window surrounds, trim, and dual exhaust outlets. The reverse lights do not work, and there are blemishes on the left front fender front bumper in addition to paint flaking on the right A-pillar.

The 15″ wire wheels and Vredestein Sprint Classic tires were installed in 2023. The car was factory equipped with an independent front suspension and a trailing link rear suspension. Stopping power is handled by four-wheel disc brakes, and work in March 2024 included overhauling the front calipers and replacing the brake servo.

The cockpit houses front and rear bench seats trimmed in black leather along with color-coordinated door panels. A heater is installed, and burl walnut veneers adorn the dashboard, door caps, and window frames. Delamination on the dashboard is depicted in the gallery below. There is wear on the upholstery, and the interior lights, light panel switch, and gauge illumination panel switch do not work.

A replacement four-spoke steering wheel was installed following the seller’s acquisition and fronts a storage cubby. The centrally located Smiths instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer with an integrated clock, an ammeter, and gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer does not work and currently shows 77k miles. The seller reports having added approximately 1k miles under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.4-liter XK inline-six was factory rated at 210 horsepower and 213 lb-ft of torque. Work following the seller’s acquisition has involved overhauling the carburetors, replacing ignition components, and changing fluids. The front engine mounts and vacuum hoses for the cold start valve were replaced in preparation for the sale.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. The driveshaft center support bushings and the transmission mounted were replaced in 2023. There is a leak at the transmission and the seller reports a shudder when shifting into third gear. The intermediate speed hold has been disabled and replaced by a manual switch for the cold start valve.

The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate lists factory colors as well as identification numbers and shows a manufacture date of June 1, 1959.

The sequence S992829BW is listed as the chassis number on the data plate, and the sequence is listed as the VIN on the current Virginia title but with a “5” in place of the “S.” The Virginia title also carries a “not actual” odometer brand.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
