Opening bid $15,000 reserve not met, no bids yet 8 days left in auction.

    Sellers description:
I found this 1961 Mark IX in a garage, down in New Jersey almost 9-years ago!

The Body # N10931 - Engine # NE1925-8 - Gearbox # JBC7202 and Chassis # per JDHT 793957BW...The VIN # listed above is what the State of RI has put on the vehicle registration form and what was on the Bill of Sale when I purchased it and was also supplied to JDHT to use in researching the vehicle's history. the vehicle was built on 9 March 1961 and was originally dispatched on 14 April 1961 - wherein it was delivered to a Mr. A.A. Raeburn - 888 Park Avene - New York, NY. The records also show that it was an Overseas delivery on 28 April 1961

I had always wanted one as my Commanding Officer, (Briggs Cunningham’s cousin) when I was in the USAF down at Shaw AFB, in the early 60’s, had just bought one and allowed me to drive it all over the base…running errands for him!

Up until I found this Mark IX I could never afford one... and all that I had looked at were rust buckets beyond my capabilities and/or at anything to a cost-reasonable price of restoration!

This car had been restored in the 1980’s and as best could be told was original with only 38,000-miles on it! It had been re-painted Chocolate Brown and Tan! And, while the restoration (paint job) was poor, at best, the car proved to be all but 100% RUST FREE!

Working with Mike Cook, the Editor of the Jaguar Club’s National Magazine, and the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust we were able to trace back to the factory’s original build records, obtain the cars “Birth Certificate” along with info on where and to whom the car was originally delivered!

Not by any means being rich and fully understanding that a professional, Concours Restoration, would cost twice what the car would be worth upon completion, I began a dedicated restoration of this car, as a “Daily Driver, and also brought it back to its original color of British Racing Green!

When I purchased the car the Left Front fender was a wee-bit crumpled as a result of a minor fender bender, and that was the extent, other then the aforementioned horrible restoration, wrong with it!

The car shortly after arriving back in RI went into a small, local, one man and his son. body shop…the owner being a retired GM line worker (Painter) at GM’s, now closed, assembly plant in Framingham, MA!

The car was all but totally stripped, sanded, and the R/F fender was repaired wherein, as mentioned above, it was re-sprayed BRG with the lower portion in a proper, contrasting shade of tan!

While in the body shop both fuel tanks were removed and sent out for cleaning, refurbishing and an interior protective coating! Some of the fuels lines were later replaced and the car had two new HD Lucas fuel pumps installed! (Also, a short while later, the SU Carbs were sent out to Joe Curto for a total overhaul including a new automatic choking solenoid being installed!)

Upon the car leaving the body shop (and my saving up some more money) the car then went down to South County Motors in Wakefield, RI, a former New Car Saab Dealership that now specialized in the repair and restoration of British Cars! (NOTE: he is a short distance away from the world famous Bassett’s Jaguar Restoration Shop…which I would have loved to have retained, but could not afford!

While at South County the entire braking system was redone and a new, proper and exact replacement wiring harness, custom made by RI Wiring, was installed! (NOTE: I remained “Positive Ground!” At the same time the ignition system was changed over to a Pertronix Electronic Ignition System!

A set of proper sized, but radial tires, were custom made for the car by Diamond back Classic Tires that also included the molding in of original appearing whitewalls!

Finally, after banging my head against the wall and draining my funds, in my opinion, and in hindsight, on trying to rebuilt the vehicle’s DG-35 gearbox, I decided to do what many other Jag Owners have done and that was to convert the Mark IX over to a GM 700R4 4-speed automatic gearbox with overdrive and a custom made drive shaft of American Specs…something I should have done initially! Especially as the car now, also because of the starter conversion and the Pertronix ignition, along with manually controlling the automatic solenoid choking system, with a switch, the car starts immediately! (NOTE: I have the old, original, matching numbers, DG Gearbox – all disassembled and it goes with the car should someone, some day, want to make this car 100% back original….which I think would be dumb??)

And while the car is not completely done,,,,(the interior should be, especially the headliner) it is acceptable! The front seats being better then the rear! But, while worn, and some cracking, no rips or tears!

Also, the wood, overall, is in excellent shape, but a few pieces, on the passenger side, do need refinishing as do the pieces around the sunroof!

The car also, has the special order bucket seats, which the automatic normally did not come with!

I have already purchased and they will be included, new front and rear glass rubber window seals from Bassett’s!

I also picked up a factory carpet kit from Premier Jag Interior Shop “BAS” and also discussed their making new front and rear seat covers and door panels…which they advised me they still can do!

While the car, again, is not a “Pebble Beach” Concours winning car, it is as nice looking and as well done as I could possibly do wherein I won a 2nd-Place, overall, Best in Show, at the prestigious British Car Show held every year at the Edaville RR on the way to cape Cod….and just last month another 2nd-place Best Jaguar, at the huge British Car Show (almost 400-entries) “British by the Sea” held at Harkness Memorial Park in Wallingford, CT!

NOW…no misunderstandings here….the car is not perfect yet…..but, with the expenditure of a few more thousands of dollars it can be….its just that I cannot afford to take it to that level because in the last 2-years I have had 3-Heart Attacks, which have forced me to retire before I was ready and had the financial where with all to continue on with my hobbies and also completing this car…a life long dream….THAT I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SEE IT STAY HERE IN NEW ENGLAND, WHERE THE CAR CAN BE SEEN…. AND I ENCOURAGE INTERESTED BUYERS TO DO SO!

Lastly, since the car was re-sprayed it has developed a few chips, because it has been used! However, and unfortunately, it has also developed some, I would call, minor cracking of the paint where the R/F fender repair had to be done and fiberglass used!

Also, all of the many extras that I have obtained over the years, (factory workshop manual, original parts catalog, original product brochures, ads, flyers, magazines, magazine articles, lube charts, electrical charts, etc., etc) are pictured within this listing and will be included and given to the buyer at no additional charge!

    Sellers description:
I am 69-years old, live in Cumberland, RI, spent over 45-years in the automotive industry, prior to retirement, working for Porsche Cars of Germany here in the US as a Field Rep. I then went to work for SAAB Cars USA ending my career just prior to GM purchasing Saab. From then, until my retirement, 4-years ago, I sold, installed and trailed dealership and small repair shops on different automotive business management, and technical diagnostic repair software systems!

I fell in love with Jaguar Mark IX's while in the USAF in the early 60's at Shaw AFB. As luck would have it my commanding officer was Briggs Cunningham's cousin and he had just purchased a 1961 Mark IX in BRG. The good Major took a liking to me and let me use his Mark IX to run errands all over the base for him...as needed! It was then I made a promise to myself that some day I would own one!

I am a member of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club of the UK and a former member of the US Jaguar Club which is how I located my Mark IX up for sale....it was advertised in the Jaguar Journal.

The car was in a barn down in Southern, New Jersey. It had been stored there for years having had an horrendous so-called restoration done sometime in the 80's wherein the car was stripped and repainted 'Chocolate Brown and Tan' and the entire interior re-dyed.

The car had been in a minor fender bender prior to having been stored wherein the right front fended had been dented.....however the car was RUST FREE so I bought it and hauled it home with the help of 12-year old grandson!

The first thing I did was contact Mr. Mike Cook the editor of the Jaguar Journal and paid to have the vehicle's history traced and also obtain, from the Jaguar heritage Trust, the cars 'Birth Certificate'. (IE: Build and original delivery history wherein I found out that the Mark IX had originally been build and painted British Racing Green. (NOTE: The framed copy of the Birth Certificate comes with the car!

Thus, then, began what turned out to be a 10-year restoration of the car as as good a 'Daily Driver' restoration as good be afforded and made common sense as to how much money could be poured into the car vs. what is the market value of such a car restored to that condition vs. a Concours restoration such as was done by Tom Brady, of the New England Jaguar Club, to his Mark IX....who owns the most absolutely pristine and Concours Mark Ix in this entire country!

It should be noted that Tom helped me and provided me with a lot of help and guidance with this project over the past 10-years....up to and including his helping me locate and purchase a pair of unbelievably rare 'ROITER" fully adjustable bucket seats that were fully restored and recovered, in leather, over what was the final phase of the restoration an 11-month stay in the upholstery shop wherein the ENTIRE interior was redone, to factory, along with the trunk!

Now the 10-year history of the restoration!

The car was completely stripped, sanded down, the dented fender repaired, and the car was re-sprayed back to a shade of British Racing Green. The gas tanks, while at the body shop were removed and sent out to be flushed and coated.

A new set of 5-replica bias ply, whitewall tires, from Diamond Back Classics were ordered, and eventually mounted and balanced.

From there the car went to South County Motors, the former Saab Dealer in Wakefield, RI (not too far from Bassett's) that today specializes in a lot of British car repair work and restoration!

While at South County the wiring harness was replaced with a custom made OE Spec harness from RI Wiring. The entire brake system was overhauled. The carburetors were sent off to Joe Curto to be completely re-built...upon their return they were re-installed and then almost the entire fuel system was replaced including 2-new rebuild HD Lucas Fuel Pumps being installed! The generator was rebuilt and a new power steering pump installed!

An all new, from England, 'Stainless Steel' exhaust system was installed and a major enhance was then made wherein the DG-35 2-speed gearbox was replaced (yet comes with the car) with a GM 700R4 4-speed automatic with overdrive...the conversion done using a 'John's cars' conversion kit!

The next step was to bring the car up to Hyde Park, MA to Warren Cosetti's Jaguar Specialty shop wherein Warren rebuild the front end and super tuned and calibrated the Joe Curto rebuilt carburetors!

At this point, and out of money, the car was put in inside storage (I have a 7-car garage) where it sat, started and driven occasionally in the local area until more discretionary funds (discretionary funds being money your wife does not know you have and how much you are spending.) became available.

FINALLY, I was able to next bring the Mark IX to Upton Foreign Motors in Upton, MA...a Jaguar Specialty and Repair facility run by a an ex-dealership, 20-year Jaguar Factory trained master technician.

Dana went over the car, head to tail checking everything and making sure everything was as right could be mechanically. He also installed a custom designed, by Stew Jones to exacting Jaguar factory specifications and measurements, an all aluminum multi-core radiator, custom built by Ron Davis Racing!

Once all of this was done the final phase, and the most costly part of this restoration, was next and that wound-up being an 11-month replacement and restoration of the entire interior (and trunk)..... all of the needed components coming from either BAS and OSJI (original Jaguar Specification Interiors) formally G.W. Bartlett Co. of Muncie, Indiana.

That, Ladies and Gentleman, should just about cover it??? Having seen, over the years, especially the Imported Car Hobby and Shows being a big part of my life, over the years, and having seen many a Mark VII, VIII and Mark IX, and please excuse me for not being humble, I would confidently say, as I would not waste anyone's time here, that this Mark IX is one of the better restored, to a high-level Daily Driver classification, that you are going to find!

Is there anything wrong with it???

YES....and I plan on fixing it once my body and paint guy that did the original work, returns in the Spring from Florida! Unfortunately, the right front fender, which if you will remember I said was slightly dented, when I purchased the car, the body filler has cracked. Nothing all that serious and I have the original color match paint for it! Also, when the radiator was being installed some paint got chipped. It also will be taken care of at the same time!

And why am I selling it?

In July, 2011 I was diagnosed with 3-different kinds of cancer. (Hodgkin, Liver and Prostate) 2-days later I had my 4-Heart Attack. (Now up to 9-Stents) Two of the cancers are in remission, but I am, come March, looking at 8-weeks of daily radiation. Needless to say I have incurred some tremendous medical expenses....as such I need to get rid of some of my toys! I have another Jaguar, an XJ-6 Vanden Plas with a Corvette 350ci TPI, fully blueprinted motor and an Alfa Romeo Spider) I have decided to sell the Mark IX because what was my original intent for its use is really, my overall health condition taken into consideration, no longer feasible! The plan was for entering numerous long distance Vintage Rallies and Tours!
