This 1948 Jaguar Mark IV is a left-hand-drive four-door saloon that was distributed new in September 1948 through the Hoffman Motor Car Company in New York and has remained in the seller’s family since 1963. Finished in two-tone gray and black, the car is powered by a Mark V-sourced 3.5-liter OHV inline-six that was installed in 1968 and mated to a Moss four-speed manual transmission. Additional features include twin SU carburetors, electronic ignition, 18” wire wheels, a steel sliding sunroof, and leather interior upholstery. This left-hand-drive Mark IV is now offered with service invoices, a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, its damaged original block, and transferable New York registration in the seller’s name.
This example features saloon bodywork that was refinished during a 1960s refurbishment in two-tone gray and black in lieu of its original shade of Gunmetal, and additional paintwork was performed in the 1970s. Various imperfections in the finish are visible. Factory trafficators have been removed from the B-pillars, after which their pockets were filled in. The grille was re-chromed in the 2000s.
The 18” wire wheels exhibit areas of corrosion and are secured by two-eared knock-offs. They are wrapped in 5.25/5.50-18 AllState Safety Tread tires. A matching spare is secured in a compartment under the trunk. Exterior features include rear-hinged doors, a sliding steel sunroof, a louvered centrally hinged hood, Lucas tri-bar headlights, bumper-mounted front fog lamps, a tilt-up windshield, and a reproduction Leaper hood ornament. Damage at one end of the hood hinge is noted, one of the fog lamp mounts is loose, and the front bumper overriders are missing.
The cabin is trimmed in black leather over the front bucket seats and rear bench, while matching vinyl was fitted over door panels in the 1960s. Cracking is present on the seat surfaces, which the seller notes have been covered in a paint-like coating, and covers have been added over the front cushions. Replacement black loop carpeting is fitted over the floors. The headliner is said to be a replacement and exhibits numerous areas of pest damage, and rust is noted under a patch inside the left-hand glovebox. Clamps that secure the windshield in the closed position are missing on each side.
The four-spoke steering wheel is situated on the left-hand side of a wood dash that is complemented by wood door caps and window frames. Smiths instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, a reverse-sweep tachometer with an inset clock, and gauges monitoring amperage, fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 31k miles, approximately 2,600 of which were added under current family ownership. The clock does not work.
The 3.5-liter inline-six is said to have been installed in 1968 after being sourced from a Mark V, which carried over the powerplant used in the corresponding Mark IV variant. The overhead-valve cylinder head was reportedly overhauled in 2011, and stainless-steel exhaust downpipes were installed the same year. Electronic ignition was added in 2019. The block from the removed engine is included in the sale, but is said to be cracked along the water jacket. The damaged block stamping is number SL3288.
Power is sent to the rear wheels by a Moss four-speed manual gearbox. The suspension system features gaiter-wrapped semi-elliptical leaf springs and lever-arm hydraulic shock absorbers all around, and braking is handled by Girling mechanically actuated drums.
The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate lists the original colors and component numbers as well as a build date of June 16, 1948, and delivery in the US to a Mr. Beebe. Service invoices are included in the sale, as are removed ignition components. A trunk-lid-mounted tool tray is present, although all tools are missing with the exception of a jack, jack handle, and engine crank.
The car does not have a title, as it is registered in a state that does not issue titles for a vehicle of its age. It is being sold on its registration.
