Lot No: 538
1987 Jaguar D-Type Replica
Registration no. 243 CLJ
Chassis no. 307783BW
Engine no. 2B33378
Sold for £23,575 inclusive of Buyer's Premium
'This 190mph technical masterpiece, designed, built and prepared totally within Jaguar, was to achieve a hat-trick of spectacular Le Mans victories in the 1950s.' - Paul Skilleter, Jaguar: The Sporting Heritage.
Jaguar's multiple Le Mans wins in the 1950s - twice with the C-Type and three times with its D-Trype successor - as well as numerous victories in the other great classic endurance events, have ensured a continuing healthy demand for replicas of these rare and exotic works sports-racers. Constructed by its first owner in the late 1980s, this replica of Jaguar's legendary Le Mans-winning D-Type uses an LR Roadsters Ram LM body/chassis kit and the 3.8-litre XK engine from a 1964 Jaguar MkX saloon. Constructed around a tubular-steel backbone spaceframe chassis, designed by Adrian Reynard, the car features steel-braced glassfibre bodywork in the long nose, long fin, passenger-carrying style with full-width windscreen first seen on the works Le Mans cars in 1955. The front lower wishbones, steering arms and rear lower tie-bars are fabricated, but otherwise the Ram LM used Jaguar running gear almost exclusively, unlike some of its rivals. Described by Kit Cars & Specials magazine as having 'undisputed mechanical integrity,' the Ram LM was judged 'one of the most desirable replicas we have yet laid our hands on.' The factory claimed a performance, depending on engine tune, of 0-60mph in approximately 5.9 seconds and a maximum speed in overdrive top approaching 150mph, stunning figures even by today's standards.
Accompanying invoices indicate that the engine was rebuilt at the time of construction, and that it benefits from a balanced crankshaft, lightened flywheel and cast-aluminium sump. The cylinder head too was overhauled and gas-flowed, and the donor MkX's automatic gearbox replaced by a four-speed manual unit. Currently in the hands of only its second owner, the car is finished in green with matching interior, the latter featuring accommodation for two, an aluminium steering wheel and 0-160mph speedometer. Last serviced by Jaguar Workshop in West London, '243 CLJ' boasts new adjustable shock absorbers and springs all round, and is described by the vendor as in generally excellent condition,
This exciting replica of one the most charismatic of British racing sports cars comes with original invoices and correspondence relating to its construction, subsequent service/maintenance bills, build photographs, factory brochure, Jaguar Cars Vehicle Information Sheet (relating to the donor MkX) current road fund licence, MoT to November 2010 and Swansea V5 registration document.
