This Jaguar MK II, identified by chassis 224716, is equipped with a more powerful 3.8-litre engine. The odometer shows a mileage of 19,178 km, but - from what its current owner tells us - from the 1970s to 2020 the car has covered about 100,000 km, almost all of it at classic car rallies and related events. However, the engine is as good as new, having been rebuilt virtually from scratch in 2021 by a Modena workshop specializing in restoring vintage Jaguars. Since then, the car has covered about 4,000 km (1,500 since the last service, which was last March).
On the Outside
At the request of its second owner, the Jaguar MK II was repainted in the late 1970s in a lighter grey than the factory shade. Since then, according to the seller, the body has undergone only a few brush touch-ups to reduce marks caused by scratches and minor bumps from parking. Apart from a few imperfections, overall the car is in good order. The most obvious defect is some crawling and slight grooves on the right side. The paint has some cracks, especially on the nose (at the upper edges of the grille, above the bumper blade) and at the top of the front fenders. No vignettes or evident dents are present. Looking at the bodywork in detail, traces of surface corrosion and small rust blooms (evidenced by blisters on the paint) are evident: in the right front underbody (jack application area); in the lower part of the doors, in general; in the rear hood. All chrome parts are in good condition, while the rubber seals of the rear headlights (which are perfectly intact as are the front ones and the turn signal buds) appear slightly cracked. The spoked wheels, typical of this model, are also in good condition.
On the Inside
The interior of the Jaguar MK II is completely preserved. The leather seats (especially the driver's seat) have cracks from wear and tear, but there are no rips or clear splits. The door trim panels are intact and well upholstered (with the exception of the front one on the passenger side, which is a bit unglued), and the wooden parts, from the dashboard to the wooden rear passenger tables, are also in excellent condition. The leather of the gear stick cap is rather cracked. Lifting up the protective luggage compartment cover reveals some surface corrosion, particularly on the edges of the spare tire slot (the original is present). The ceiling lining is intact and well-stretched, as are the sun visors. The front and rear seat belts, not provided in the 1960s, were added in more recent times motif for safety reasons.
Underneath
The underside shows some signs of corrosion at some zones of the chassis, but the bottoms and the suspension arms don't show any rust holes. The engine compartment appears to be in good order. Apart from the monobloc, which is factory original, practically everything under the hood has been changed, replacing irreparable parts with original spare parts primarily sourced from the UK (where they are more readily available given the more significant popularity of these cars across the Channel). Major work includes complete replacement of pistons; replacement of cylinder liners; cylinder head rectification; clutch assembly replacement; replacement of timing chains, water pump and thermostat; crankshaft rectification; replacement of valves and valve guides. The four-speed manual transmission works well but needs the overdrive restored.
History Highlights
This left-hand drive MK II was first registered in the province of Bologna in 1967 and, following a change of ownership, re-registered in the province of Reggio Emilia in 1976. Since then, it has always belonged to the same family of enthusiasts of the marque, into which other Jaguar models have transited over the years, including, in more recent times, an XK and two S-Types. The car comes with its original registration certificate and there is also a detailed list of recent workshop work with invoices for more than 20,000 euros. In 1999 the car has been certified by Asi (Automotoclub Storico Italiano) as a vehicle of historic interest and passed its last overhaul in December 2021.
