This Jaguar MKII 3.8 is a refined and stylish classic British sporting sedan, which has been enhanced with a number of ‘Coombs’-style upgrades.
Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 3.8-litre DOHC straight-six, now fed by triple Dell’Orto carburettors, which sends its power to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with electric overdrive.
This example was originally a New Zealand-delivered model, which was first registered in May 1961. It is now located in Australia, where it has been with the seller and its fourth Australian owner for two years.
The odometer indicates 53,229 miles, though this is not warranted.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
This MkII 3.8 is finished in a timeless shade of black, over a beige vinyl and leather-trimmed interior, featuring gold seat belts, swathes of wood veneer trim, and chrome trim highlights.
It rides on a set of 15-inch chrome wire wheels with two-spoke knock-offs, fitted with Falken Azenis tyres.
Equipment includes push-out front and rear quarter light windows, a wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel, Smiths gauges, dashboard toggle switches, heater and ventilation controls, and a Clarion stereo.
This example has been enhanced with a number of Coombs-style upgrades, including headlamp grilles, bullet-style door mirrors, a Forward Engineering engine head, triple Dell’Orto carburettors with individual throttle body trumpets, a later-model fully synchro gearbox, cut-away rear wheel arches, a louvred bonnet, lowered suspension, and braided fuel lines.
The car comes with the dealership shipping and sales record, the New Zealand registration records, three keys, and a Production Record Trace Certificate from the Jaguar Heritage Trust.
CONDITION
Specific notes from the seller include: the car has the appearance of being repainted during its lifetime, there is a minor paint bubble on the left-hand wheel arch and on the boot lid, a blemish on the left-hand roof panel from bird leavings, the interior upholstery has been replaced, the rear seats have been retrimmed in beige vinyl, the front seats appear to be from an XJ6 S3, and the stitching on the front seats needs renewing.
The car’s last roadworthiness test was conducted in early 2023, which is understood to have resulted in a clean pass with no advisories.
SERVICE HISTORY
This MkII’s most recent maintenance was carried out in July 2023 at around an indicated 53,000 miles by Classic Fix, which consisted of the fuel system being recommissioned, including the tank being removed, cleaned and resealed, and the fuel lines and filter cleaned and replaced where necessary, as well as the engine mounts being replaced, and the brakes cleaned, flushed, and bled.
Other notable maintenance includes the carburettors being cleaned, re-jetted and tuned.
