Previous owner 15 years; restored 25 years ago and only 8,000 miles since; successfully completed the MSA Euroclassic in 2013; synchro gearbox; a most attractive example of this classic sporting saloon

As the Heritage Certificate confirms, this Jaguar Mk2 3.4 was built in July 1961 and was originally an automatic finished in Opalescent Dark Blue with a Light Blue leather interior. A UK market car, it was sold via Newsomes of Coventry and was first registered in Warwickshire with the number 9691 WD, a number which was replaced by OFO 989 in 1996.

Nothing is known of the early history of the car, but an HPI check shows that in September 1997 it was subject to a Category C insurance loss (damaged; repairable). HPI also records a colour change from blue to grey in 1998, which is presumably when the damage was repaired and the car was restored. In 2011 it was submitted for an AutoLign Inspection which it passed with flying colours, confirming that the repairs had been done to a high standard and the car was thoroughly roadworthy.

The previous owner acquired the car in 2009 when the odometer was showing 47,000 miles and he used it regularly, the odometer currently showing 51,630 miles. In 2013 it successfully completed the MSA Euroclassic with the owner's whole family on board, a run through France, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg during which it performed faultlessly. Prior to departure it had a major service which included a new clutch, radiator, dynamo and brake and clutch master cylinders.

Converted to manual overdrive at some point, it has a notably smooth all-synchro gearchange which is a lot nicer to use than the old Moss ‘box that Mk2 Jags would have had in period. We noticed that the brakes are also uncommonly effective for a Mk2 and the whole car feels taut and responsive, indicating that whoever restored it certainly knew what they were doing.

Apart from a bunch of invoices from 2008 for routine service items, there is no real service history with the car but the previous owner had a collection of classics and we are told that they were all looked after properly. There are 14 old MOTs back to 1998 and they paint a good picture, with very few advisories over the 8,000 miles the car has covered since it was restored.

As you can see in the photos, it is a most attractive looking Jaguar all round which has been starting promptly and running beautifully as we have moved it around on site, with good 40psi oil pressure.

The current owner purchased this Jaguar from Brightwells in early 2023 and has done some 200 miles in the car, but due to his large collection of cars and recent loss of some storage space, it is available to buy again.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
