Seen on eBay, November 2006. Ad reads:

"This very straight and rust free 3.4 Mark I Automatic has been off of the road since 1972. The elderly gentleman that I bought the car from purchased it in 1967, as verified by the original California Pink Slip. He and his son took it apart for restoration, but as these things usually go, it was never completed.

I have had my body man examine the car, and he can find no rust anywhere except for the minor surface variety. The trunk floor and spare tire well are perfect. The only Bondo we can find on the entire car is an area at the front of the right hand rocker, which appears to have been a dent repair and not because of rust. The paint on the car is terrible; dry spots, runs, you name it. However, it appears to have great adhesion. The body panels are very straight, but there are minor dings and waves here and there. All in all, the body is amazingly good. There is no evidence of crash damage in the nose or tail, or anywhere else. The only odd thing is that someone appears to have cut out the inner door panel on the drivers door, presumably for access to the window, and then welded it back in.

The engine number and head number, KE8960-8, both match the data plate. I did manage to get the engine running but I had to cut the exhaust pipes to do so, as mice had nested in the mufflers and plugged them up. The engine ran poorly, as expected, but did hit on all six cylinders with great oil pressure and no bad noises. I think there is a problem with the automatic transmission, as I got forward movement but no backwards movement. The brakes are inoperative.

As far as completeness of the trim parts, you will have to examine the pictures and judge for yourself. To me, it looks like everything is there. The bumpers and over-riders were beautifully chromed many years ago. The wood veneer will have to be repaired, but by in large the woodwork is solid. There are no books or tools. All of the glass is good, except for the windscreen which has a crack. "

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
