Ebay item 5/5/09
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jaguar-1957-Jaguar-Mark-1-MK1-3-4-Sedan-with-Provenance_ ...
Current bid $6,800 reserve not met, 6 bids 8 days left in auction

Sellers description:
This is a true 100% rotisserie restoration of a 1957 Jaguar Mark 1 sedan with 4 speed transmission and overdrive. This car was completely disassembled to its unibody shell and every component was replaced or restored to factory original.

This car has a very interesting history and provenance. We have complete indisputable factory documentation to verify its heritage. It was originally sold and delivered to Hugh Auchincloss of Merrywood Estate in McLean, Virginia near Washington D.C. Hugh Auchincloss married Jackie Kennedy's mother Janet in 1942 after her divorce from Jack Bouvier. Jackie grew up at the Merrywood Estate with her mother Janet, her step-father Hugh and her sister Lee. Twelve years after her mother's marriage to Hugh Auchincloss, Jackie married Jack Kennedy. In 1957 when this car was delivered to Merrywood, Jackie and her young US senator husband lived in Washington D.C. However, they spent weekends at her family estate during this period as JFK wrote his Pulitzer prize winning book "Profiles in Courage" at Merrywood. Jackie and Jack may have driven or ridden in this car.

Here are some of the details of the restoration:

No cost was spared in this restoration. The car was completely disassembled and the unibody was placed on a rotisserie where any damaged or rusted components were replaced with correct Martin Robey Jaguar panels. The car was completely sandblasted and stripped to bare metal. The paint chosen was DuPont urethane. The color is a perfect match for the original Old English Ivory. The paint quality is exceptional. The undercarriage is beautifully detailed, especially the Double S stainless exhaust system from England. Extra paint from the restoration will come with the car.

Every mechanical component was either replaced with original Jaguar parts or restored. The NEW parts purchased include: Connolly leather seats, wheel trim rings, Wilton wool carpets and headliner, all new original Jaguar rubber door and window seals, all other rubber components replaced with NOS Jaguar components, foglights and switch, trunk lock assembly, jack and handle, trunk lamp housing, steering wheel, horn grills, hubcaps and badges, Spax shock absorbers, radial tires ( size 165R15 ), brake master cylinder, steel fuel and brake lines, grill assembly and badge, turn signals and lenses, rear windshield chrome, door sill plates, fender mirrors ( Lucas reproduction ), all wheel cylinders, brake shoes, stainless exhaust, gas tank and sending unit, fuel pump, motor mounts, front springs, clutch slave cylinder, Jubilee clips, window channel felts and cat whiskers, rearview mirrow, complete new cooling hoses, brake hoses, clutch flexible hose, battery cables with correct helmet ends, battery sleeve and cover, taillight assemblies, windshield, boot mat, correct flat Tri-bar headlights (reproduction), headlight trim rims, teardrop trims, cigar lighter assembly, crankshaft dampener, Lucas sport coil, windshield wiper arms and blades, starter, generator, carb kits, scripts, spark wire conduit and AC plug ends, servo kit, door panels, parcel shelf, underdash panels, original owners manual, tool kit ( not complete ), fan shroud, sunvisor chromes, starter solenoid, all suspension components and mounts and front and rear wheel bearings.

Parts that could not be bought as new old stock were restored to perfection. Bumpers and door handles are flawlessly replated. All wood was beautifully refinished. The wood on this car is perfect. The seats were completely disassembled and rebuilt prior to reupholstery. All new jute insulation was installed. Each door was completely disassembled and window channels and mechanisms rebuilt. The engine was completely rebuilt prior to my purchase of the car (have receipts for $3800 for this work). New pistons and a rebuilt head were installed for the rebuild. All new timing chain tensioners were installed in 2004. The differential was completely rebuilt in 2004 at a cost of over $600 and it is now perfect. A new clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing were installed.

Every effort was made to maintain originality during the restoration. The car comes with a Jaguar factory Heritage Certificate. The keys are the original Union keys and all locks work perfectly. I purchased the car in August 1995 and completed the restoration in 1998. The car has been driven approximately 100 miles per year. The odometer reads 74,360 miles and I believe this to be original since the speedometer/odometer was original and operating when it was reconditioned. The car runs and drives beautifully. Interested bidders are encouraged to come to Rochester, New York to examine the car and drive it. If you are unable to come personally to inspect the car, there are qualified companies here in Rochester who can inspect the car in your behalf. The car is licensed and New York State inspected.

As far as problems with the car, they are few: The overdrive has been cranky and sometimes will not engage. The car has rarely been driven the last 10 years and the new owner might consider having the carbs readjusted. Everything else works perfectly on the car. It is extremely tight and quiet. The engine is very strong and starts beautifully and runs very cool in all temperatures and burns no oil. There was a slight rub where the passenger front door meets the front fender that shows some brush touch-up. There are a few drips of oil on the garage floor after it has sat for a few days. There are two tiny dings on the vertical grill vanes. There is a crack in the chrome surround on the driver's rear door. The door, hood and trunk seams are very good but the lower front corners of the two front doors might be adjusted to fit a bit closer to the body. There are 3 or 4 chips on door and trunk edges that were brush touched up.

About the 1957 Jaguar Mark 1:
Completely restored, like new condition after a long and expensive nuts and bolts rotisserie restoration. Every part was completely disassembled and restored to factory original condition. The body was sandblasted and stripped to bare metal. Wood and leather are perfect. This is rare, an all matching numbers car!! Body, transmission and engine are all original and matching. No piece meal. The car is like new and has authenticity information and prominence! The car has a clear title with absolutely no previous damage.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
