Dating from April 1968 this is certainly a very smart example of the rather rare Jaguar 420 model which was produced for only two years to follow the S-Type before replacement by the XJ6 in 1970.

This example, powered of course by the legendary 4,235cc straight-six (with drive going to the road through the rear wheels via the typical automatic gearbox) was subject to a complete bare metal strip down and restoration in the early Noughties which has been chronicled in a tome of photographs on file and then featured in a six-page article in Classics Magazine in June 2004 – a copy of which is also on file.

The restoration included a full strip down, corrosion repaired, panels renewed or repaired where necessary, the engine rebuilt and the car fully prepared and re-painted. It has only covered around 6,000 miles since, the odometer now showing around 69,000 miles.

The navy blue interior looks to have been left alone, showing a wonderful patina that is all too often lost with unnecessary re-trims – this is a lovely place to be with super wood trim, nice carpets and good headlining too.

The car has been in storage for a number of years but has had some useful works carried out recently including a replacement torque converter, new alternator, new battery, exhaust, sub frame mounts, new fluids and thorough check-over. As a result, the car starts promptly and runs well with good oil pressure and looks most attractive all round.

The history file includes the V5C, Jaguar operating, maintenance and service handbook, 420 hardback service manual, selection of bills, file of photos and four old MOTs.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
