Auction description:
1968 Jaguar 420
Colour Red
Odometer 101,123 Kilometers
Engine size 4235
Town Marbella
Location International
Country Spain
Rare manual example
From an important private collection
Fastidiously maintained
Wonderful condition throughout
The current owner is a significant car collector based in Spain with an extensive collection encompassing Jaguars, Rolls Royces, Bentleys and Ferraris. The collector retains an in-house mechanic who is charged with maintaining the collection regardless of cost.
As a consequence, this car has had everything it could possibly need during his ownership. Recently that included a full brake system restoration, a carburettor rebuild, steering box restoration, new battery and filters and the period correct radio being repaired.
The Paperwork
The car comes with the current Spanish “Ficha tecnica and permiso de circulaciĆ³n” or the technical data and registration certificate, which is Spain’s MOT equivalent, and also has Spanish historic plates and the ITV for every 3 years.
Other sundry paperwork is available, detailing the maintenance work undertaken whilst in the ownership of the current owner.
The Interior
The interior presents in great, original condition given the age of the car. It is believed to be entirely original and unrestored. The wide front seats remain well padded with the leather being well worn but unripped and retaining their original deep blue colour.
The carpets are in a complimentary blue and appear to be in a very good condition. The door cards and dash top appear undamaged and present very well too. These padded items were a significant safety development over the S-Type’s unforgiving wooden dash and door tops.
The dash is faced in wood veneer and the varnish appears a little worn in places, but this is only noticeable upon close inspection. As was the norm in Jaguars of this period there is a myriad of analogue dials, gauges and switches in evidence. These are all reported to work as expected and certainly appear to be in great condition.
The Exterior
The bodywork and paintwork of this 420 appear to be in excellent condition. The car is believed to have been the subject of a high-quality body restoration and respray in the last five years or so. The deep red paintwork appears extremely lustrous, and no areas of concern were noted or reported.
The brightwork on the exterior of the car appear to have been refinished or replaced also with bumpers, grills, handles and badges all presenting very well indeed.
The 15-inch chromed wire wheels really finish the car off perfectly. They are in excellent condition and are affixed with the signature, Jaguar inscribed twin eared chrome spinners. The wheels are shod with high-quality Uniroyal Rain Expert 3 tyres all round in a 205/70 configuration.
The tyres appear to have been recently fitted with a very good depth of tread in evidence.
The Mechanics
This powerful 4.2L straight-six engine was a key feature of this car at launch. It gave owners the chance to sit behind an E-Type engine, be it slightly de-tuned, whilst enjoying the comfort and room of the big saloon’s cabin.
This car is a very rare manual variant, and it is believed that no more than around 100 left hand drive manual cars were originally built, adding significantly to the appeal of this Jaguar.
Given the pampered history of this car and the careful stewardship of the owner’s in-house mechanic, it is reported that this car “drives like new and is in fantastic mechanical condition.”
