1967 Jaguar 420, original black-plate CA car, one of just under 1000 ever imported - only made 1 year! Featuring the 2-carb version of the XK-E's 4.2L inline 6-cyl. engine, independent front and rear suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes, the 420 was the culmination of Jaguar's small saloon series that began with the Mk I. The XJ6 debuted in 1968.
I bought this car from Kevin Kay Restorations in Redding, CA, in 2004. They had accomplished the BRG respray (the original color was Jaguar's "midnight BRG"), R&Red the suspension, steering and brakes, and sent the head to XKs Unlimited to be rebuilt for unleaded gas. They also installed a radiator, stainless steel exhaust system, new carpets, and trunk liners. It ran and travelled well and was my Saturday night car for two-plus years. Then began leaking oil (bad old gaskets) and I drove it less. The leaks got worse and I stopped driving it. It's been sitting in my covered, semi-protected carport for the last 5 years.
I installed a period AM/FM radio in place of the AM-only original and the amber Euro rear turn signal lenses. The exterior is excellent; the leather interior is quite good for its age but needs repair on the driver's seat. See photos below - click on the thumbnails to see the full-sized images.
It has the original dealer-installed Delanaire A/C system which looks complete but has not worked as long as I've owned it, and a power radio antenna that does work. Also includes spare tire, jack and lug wrench (sorry, no tool kit) and original Owner's Manual and other documentation.
In the last week, I have installed a new battery, fresh oil and filter, and drained the gas tanks. The motor starts and runs and even idles (but still leaks oil), power steering and brakes still seem ok.
But this car has a B-W automatic transmission that now does nothing. No D, 2, or 1, no R. It may only need to be flushed and refilled, or may need more extensive rebuilding. This car will need to be trailered or flatbedded.
I have a clear CA title. It was last registered in 2008 and is now on a "suspended" registration.
