The Jaguar 420 appeared on October 13, 1966 at the London Motor Show. Very homogeneous and endowed with a real personality, the 420 appears balanced, tepid, but above all elegant. Under the hood, it's the 4.2-liter group that powers the luxury sedan. One of the 420's strong points is also its braking, which is more efficient than the S-type. Bernard Viart in his excellent book Jaguar Berlines et Tradition describes the 420. On the road, the 420 is brilliant, fast, nervous and leaves far behind the Mark II 3.4 and 3.8 liter S in terms of accelerations up to 160 KMH.

Luxurious and comfortable, Jaguar wanted at the time to gain a foothold in the field of the statutory sedan with a large reserve of power under the right foot. With its sporting past and its victories in competition in the 1950s and 1960s, the felin firm thinks it will do well with its MK X and augurs a success almost equal to that of the E-Type. Despite this, the sedan was rather quickly sulked or even underestimated by a major part of their customers who preferred to turn to the side of Bentleys and other Rolls Royces. New delivered by Royal Elysee in France, This Jaguar 420 was registered for the first time in 1968. Aesthetically, the sedan is fitted with its plunging grille and sculpted hips; the promise is made by the make of a statutory car and leaping like a feline on its prey is held. Sporting a navy blue paint with a fine ocher border on the body, the car reveals a rather beautiful patina showing a quality paintwork done a few years ago. It is inside that the 420 is appreciated; in fact, the entire sand-colored leather upholstery was recently redone and gives the car plenty of character. The very large front seats separated by a central armrest are of rare comfort, demonstrating that the Jaguar has tried to hunt on the Rolls Royce land. The instrumentation is in the vein of what the firm was doing on the Type-e in particular; The lap counter faces the driver while the water pressure dials and the fuel gauge cut across the middle of the varnished wood dashboard which is quite cool. In the middle of the central console is the bakelite gearbox knob.

Mechanically, the 4.2L inline 6 cylinder seems to be running fine.

Our copy has been the subject of recent refection. The upholstery of the seats was changed for 4500 euros. A complete stainless steel pot was fitted in 2017.

Neither the engine nor the gearbox present any leakage which is rare in English.

Choosing a Jaguar 420 is above all appreciating the driving comfort with a noble engine that we feel when our right foot crushes the accelerator pedal. With a low price today, the 420 is surely an investment for the future.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
