Additional description from above auction:
Finished in metallic blue with black upholstery, this particular example has enjoyed a long second career as a successful historic racer. Prepared with an eye to safety as well as speed, 'EAN 784D' boasts a full roll cage, plumbed-in fire extinguisher system and uprated twin circuit braking system (dual servos, alloy callipers, balance bar etc). Converted from automatic to four-speed manual transmission, it is powered by a suitably 'breathed upon' 4235cc DOHC straight-six engine. Potentially eligible for the JEC's popular saloon championship or the CSCC's Swinging Sixties series etc, the 420 is also well suited to sprint or hillclimb usage (though putting it through a MOT test would not be impossible either). Describing the Jaguar as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment and bodywork, the vendor adds that it would be "very competitive in the right hands". Maintained by a highly capable marque specialist in recent years, this modified 420 is worthy of close inspection.

I drove this car c10 years ago when it was maintained by AJC Cars in Southampton. It went very well!

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
