Auctioned at Manor Park Classics, February 2024. Bid up to £11,500 but didn't meet the reserve. January 2025, now for sale at A1 Classic Cars, Scotland see commentary below.

Superb condition. Believed only 23,600 miles. Heritage certificate. Recent service. Ready to use.

This gorgeous Jaguar in opalescent silver blue with blue leather trim was built in 1966, delivered to Henly’s of London in February 1967 and then sold to Robert Dyas Ltd, the well-known chain of ironmongers. There it remained until 1971 when purchased by their store manager. He used it sparingly after which it was stored for about 40 years until purchased from his deceased estate by David Day of CCB Sales Ltd in 2014. A new V5 and a Heritage Certificate were obtained and it was given an extensive refurbishment, based on receipts from David Manners, the Jaguar specialist. It was more recently purchased by Villiers Classics from whom we obtained it in 2024. We have had the car fully serviced including brakes, tyres etc and refurbished the automatic choke and washers, rendering it ready to be used.

The paintwork is great and the chrome is good with one or two marks on close inspection. Inside it is superbly comfortable with soft leather and much wood with little signs of wear although nearly 60 years old. The original aircraft-style seat belts are retained. The underneath is all extremely solid and tidy and the polished aluminium 4.2 litre engine performs as it should with such a low mileage. Handbook, receipts etc and a copy of the buff log book are present in the file.

£23,850 ono

Auction description

Highlights

23,579 miles reportedly warranted

Extensive service performed following acquisition in September 2024

Dry-stored during recent years

Extensive history file including heritage certificate, 'Buff' logbook and a significant collection of invoices

Manual with overdrive

The Appeal

The seriously underrated 420 offered one of the finest expressions of Jaguar's 1960s saloon car philosophy: combining elegant styling, an opulent cabin and impressive performance from its silky-smooth DOHC XK straight-six. For those seeking a less obvious choice than an Mk2 or S-Type, these 420s are eminently worthy of your consideration, especially this remarkably original, low-mileage example from 1966.

This MOD 420 shows just 23,579 miles on the odometer, a figure the vendor says is supported by a lengthy period in storage prior to 2014. With its heritage certificate, 'Buff' logbook, and extensive expenditure records, this 420 offers the discerning Jaguar enthusiast a well-documented example that has clearly been cherished throughout its life.

The vendor summarises:

"Unrepeatable, low mileage 420 with lots of expenditure on file. Excellent driving mid-sixties' Jaguar saloon."

History and Paperwork

First registered in 1966

Acquired into the vendor's stock in September 2024

The Condition

Presents very well for its age and looks to be highly original

Reportedly running and driving very well
