The History
This beautiful S-Type, was exported to California and seemingly spent most spent its life there until being repatriated to its home soil. Limited documented history is available for the early era, although the current owner has reliable information that it was owned by the engineer and Jaguar enthusiast.
He began the body off total rebuild about seven years ago because aside from the love of this model, the body structure was very sound and had never been welded or had any serious repair.
Most of the replacement parts and spares were imported to the USA from the UK. This in itself was a huge expense. With the rebuild completed in the UK with similar finance involved the car is virtually new throughout. This is in evidence from the gallery photos and details below. Sadly, the owner in California suffered a heart attack and died before the project was completed.
Aware of his love for the project and the amount of time and money that he had extended, the family were keen that it would be sold to a buyer that would complete the rebuild. To this end the current owner bought and returned the S type to his home in the UK.
The engine has been completely rebuilt. The standard SU carburettors have been replaced with a twin Weber set up, the full benefit of this upgrade has to wait until the running in is complete. The new engine has covered barely two hundred miles.
Paperwork
The rebuild was completed professionally in the UK and the paperwork details much of the extensive work needed to finish the project. As the project progressed it was decided to change from left to right hand drive and fit a new five speed manual box.
As far as we can tell, most of the history and paperwork are post import, but as everything has either been renewed or replaced from fuel tanks to headlights this would be of only limited value anyway.
In addition to all the previous work the current owner has spent a great deal of money completing the restoration and returning this car to its former glory. The quality and condition are unlikely to be repeated elsewhere.
The vehicle is also registered as an Historic Vehicle for which it had an MOT and there were no advisories or updates required.
The Exterior
The vehicle is in exceptional condition, with only what looks to be a small blemish on the rear passenger arch, thanks once again to this detailed restoration.
The Silver Blue paint sparkles in the sunlight and the all new chrome glints in support. Brand new period correct wire wheels and tyres give the car a truly elegant finish.
This is a fine example of a beautiful classic.
The Interior
Excellence continues inside, behind the wheel, you're surrounded by a walnut veneer that has undergone detailed restoration.
Standard Jaguar switches and dials from the era in clear crisp detail adorn the dashboard. The restoration continues with new leather trimmed front seats, chrome trims, and new door and window seals throughout.
An early E type steering wheel has been fitted- which in itself is a collector’s piece- The original wheel will be included in the sale. The rear seats have not been restored but are nicely aged, in very good condition and have a very inviting patina.
New red seatbelts are fitted to the front which adds a modern feel -again the original belts will be included.
The Mechanics
As mentioned, this car has been substantially rebuilt. There is a very long list of new and reconditioned parts (pictured).
This 3.8 has been rebuilt, at the cost of several thousand pounds. It looks fabulous, has yet to be fully run in, starts and musically ticks over nicely. The components underneath are all virtually new.
With suspension, brakes, fuel tanks, twin exhausts, which includes the manifolds, all renewed. The car rides very nicely from its new and upgraded suspension.
It is obvious that a great deal of labour went into fitting all this equipment and arguably making this car better than the day it left the factory.
The odometer reads 10,000 miles. This was an identical and digital replacement for the original which was faulty. It is difficult to determine total mileage from new, and in any event is a bit irrelevant given the extent of this rebuild.
A good indicator in this respect is that the current running gear, will have had virtually the same use as the new engine, which, as mentioned above, has yet to be run in.
The Registration No. is not included in the sale, although separate negotiation is possible.
The original road wheels and set of (Five) brand new tyres are included, as is the original steering wheel, unused leather and unused carpeting from the rebuild and some boxes of spares
The current owner has made us aware of an undiagnosed clutch issue which will need to be addressed. There is a noticeable noise when the clutch is engaged from rest. As the clutch is new this should not be anything serious.
It may simply be some dirt fowling the thrust race, and will wear off but this is not certain. It’s is not a problem when driving, but is yet an unknown and may need further investigation.

1966 Jaguar S-Type 3.8 with 5 Speed Getrag Gearbox and Power Steering
Guide Price: £14,000 to £18,000
Manufacturer: Jaguar
First Registered: 1967
Model: S-Type 3.8 with 5 Speed Getrag Gearbox and Power Steering
Registration No: SJI 4625
Mileometer: 11,000
Chassis No: J67P1B79219
MOT: Exempt
Colour: Silver Blue
This Jaguar S-Type was imported from California about two years ago and re-registered with the DVLA when the majority of the ground up rebuild had been completed. At that time it was MOT'd without advisories. The vendor states that it is a stunning example of the mark with virtually every nut and bolt renewed.
The body and paint work are exceptional, the car has never been welded or, to the vendor's knowledge, repaired. The 3.8 engine was rebuilt less than 1,000 miles ago, for which there is detailed paperwork. The suspension, braking system, stainless steel exhaust, and fuel tanks are all new as evidenced by photos. The interior has been completely refurbished with new front seating and carpets throughout. The windows and door seals are all new, as is the dash and door timber work, sound system, and electrics. The visual beauty is topped off with new period-correct competition style chrome wire wheels and new tyres.
This sale is a potential bargain for someone, although the work isn't quite finished yet. This car needs a good home with someone able to complete the final tasks. The standard three speed auto box was changed for a five speed Getrag manual, and is now a bit over geared, a higher differential would resolve this. The steering box has the customary fluid leak and would benefit from an upgraded rack system. The car has been standing (always garaged) for a few months now and may need a little TLC to 'wake it up' and that amazing engine given care consideration as it is barely run in.
The low reserve reflects these final points along with the vendors need for space and time.
