History:
If you've felt that your life lacks a bit of excitement lately, this car could be just what you've been looking for. It has lots of history dating back to 1997 when it was purchased in South Africa by the previous owner who brought it back to the UK with him in 1998. At this point it was a rust-free 3.4-litre MkII MOD in Warwick Grey with a new grey leather interior.
However, the car's life started to get really interesting in October 2004 when it was bought by the current vendor with the intention of turning it into a historic rally car. He immediately despatched it to Jaguar specialist David Sedge of Maidstone to have it fully prepared for the Winter Challenge. This included the fitment of a full rally interior including roll cage, fire extinguishers, rally seats and harnesses. All the heating, demisting, lighting and electrical systems were upgraded and a full range of expensive Halda navigation equipment fitted.
In May 2005 the car was treated to a further bout of rally fettling. This included the fitment of a 3.8-litre engine which was fully rebuilt and uprated at a cost of £6,000 including new pistons; new con rods; fully gas flowed head; big valves and springs; fast road camshafts; high flow oil pump; new distributor; new water pump; lightened flywheel; competition clutch; rebuilt 2" SU carbs etc.
An aluminium auxiliary fuel tank was also fitted, foamed and baffled and fitted with a Monza-type cap, funnel and sender and a roll-over safety valve, together with a fire-proof bulkhead and liner. A complete competition exhaust system was also made and fitted. Suspension, brakes, cooling and electrical systems were also overhauled and upgraded and a new louvred bonnet fitted. In all £29,500 was spent on the car during this round of fettling.
In January 2006 the owner's cheque book took another pounding after the car holed its oil filter and lost all lubrication on a second Winter Challenge. This led to another £8,000 overhaul including a second full engine rebuild and a suspension overhaul, both to a higher spec than before. In March 2006 the car was overhauled yet again including a full service, further improvements to the brakes, suspension and electrical systems and a thorough Waxoyl.
In November 2006 a broken piston ring precipitated yet another full engine rebuild, again to a higher spec than before, at a cost of £7,000. This included new +20 thou pistons and liners; new big ends and main bearings; polished crankshaft; polished and shotpeened con rods; skimmed, rebuilt head; new clutch; refaced flywheel; two new coils; new high flow oil pump etc. At about the same time the rear axle was also completely rebuilt at a cost of £3,500 including new crown wheel and pinion, new half shafts, new hubs etc. According to dyno records kept by David Sedge, the car now puts out a reliable 260bhp and just over 300 lb/ft of torque.
During the vendor's two-and-a-half year ownership of the car, it has competed in the Rally of the Tests, Le Jog and three Winter Challenges at a total cost to his wallet of around £70,000. A suitably huge file full of bills accompanies the car, as does a Heritage Certificate confirming its origins, a current MOT certificate and a V5C.
Said to be a very competitive machine that drives very well indeed, it is eligible for a wide range of Historic Motorsport events and has a current FIVA licence. Alternatively it would make a very fast road car – the original interior is still available if required and the roll cage can easily be removed. Either way, this is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a thoroughly sorted car at a fraction of the build costs to date. The car is only being sold to fund the owner's new passion for vintage car racing.
One thing is guaranteed – driving this Jag will be a life-enhancing experience. If there is a more exciting way of keeping yourself amused while remaining fully clothed, your cataloguer cannot think of it. Buy now before New Labour bans it!
NB The Halda equipment in the car is not included in the sale but is available at an additional cost of £1,000 if required.
