1958 Jaguar Mk1 2.4-Litre Competition Saloon
Registration no. SDW 740
Chassis no. 975204DN
Engine no. 7BJ52370-8
Sold for £13,800 inc. premium
The 2.4-litre Mk1 offered here was owned in the 1980s by Graig Hinton's Classic Cars of Coventry, which at that time was campaigning Jaguars in classic saloon car racing. When purchased circa 1980, 'SDW 740' was already in race trim. At the start of the following season, the Mk1 and one of its stablemates a Jaguar Mk7 - were track tested at Mallory Park by John Brigden for Collector's Car magazine (April 1981 edition, copy article available). The running gear's specification was said to include 3.8-litre model coil springs, stiffer anti-roll bar, Koni dampers all round, Jaguar 420 front discs and a disc-braked Mk2 rear axle. Isky D-type camshafts were used in the engine, which also featured a raised (10:1) compression ratio and breathed via twin 2" SU carburettors. Maximum power was said to be in the region of 200bhp. Other noteworthy features included an additional (Mini) radiator and an E-Type header tank for the cooling system. Up to the end of the 1987 season 'SDW 740' raced regularly at every major UK circuit as well as making regular trips to the Historic Trophy Meeting at Zandvoort in Holland. For reasons unknown there was then a gap of a few years before the car returned to the track in late 1992, going on to race for the next seven years.
The Jaguar was purchased by the current vendor in 2010, since when it has benefited from considerable refurbishment including a fully overhauled engine and gearbox, and a new clutch and brakes. Described as in generally good condition, this much-campaigned historic racer is offered with restoration invoices, MoT to May 2013, Swansea V5 document and three lever-arch files of history.

Sellers description:
Jaguar Mk1 FIA Race Car
When a car becomes known by its registration number then it must surely have created an impression. When recently discussing this Mark I with a very high profile BRDC racing driver he immediately said 'You mean SDW740 Neil. I have raced against it many times over the last 30yrs. What a great racer'. This truly is a fantastic car and pretty much unique at that.
Always used as a race car and most recently part of the Alan Lloyd race program this car comes supplied with a remarkable 5 box files of race history.
In its recent iteration the car has been a 2.4litre car running magnificently, fed by an extraordinary bank of triple weber carburettors.
We have decided to remove the 2.4 litre engine and its supporting ancilliaries which will be sold with the car as part of its heritage. The car will return to 3.4 litre twin 2" SU carburettors FIA HTP specification and be supplied with papers to this effect.
With a Guy Broad 265bhp engine and a fully sorted suspension and drivetrain this racer will be very competitive and of course Goodwood Revival eligible.
A slice of Jaguar history for very little money
