Private Party Or Dealer: Dealer
This 1961 Jaguar Mark IX comes from the model’s final year of production, and it was refurbished and updated by Jason Len of XKs Unlimited for the current owner beginning in 2004. Power is provided by a rebuilt 3.8-liter XK inline-six linked with a replacement GM-sourced TH700R4 automatic transmission, and the car is finished in a two-tone blue and silver scheme over dove gray leather. Features include a power-adjustable front bench, power windows and locks, a DVD entertainment system, a sunroof, and air conditioning. Mechanical work included replacing the power steering box, overhauling the four-wheel disc brake system, reconditioning the suspension, and more detailed on more than 400 pages of included documentation. This Mark IX is now offered on dealer consignment at no reserve with photos of the refurbishment, documentation and records, and a clean California title.
The Mark IX shared its bodywork with the preceding Mark VIII with the addition of enlarged tail light housings with separate turn signal lenses as well as chrome Mark IX badging on the trunk lid. The car was disassembled and chemically stripped, rust repair was performed on the lower bodywork and the panels were treated, and the exterior was then refinished in the present two-tone blue and silver scheme separated by chrome trim. The exterior chrome trim was replated and polished prior to installation with new gaskets in 2004, and was re-polished in 2015.
Factory steel wheels are fitted with body-color and chrome knock-off style covers and are mounted with Coker Classic whitewall tires. The Mark IX was the first Jaguar sedan to be equipped with four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes, and the system was overhauled with replacement lines, hoses, rebuilt calipers, and updated brake pads. The power steering system also received a replacement steering box, pump, and lines.
The cabin was reupholstered in dove gray leather with blue piping, dark blue carpets and mats. The burl wood dashboard, door, and window trim were professionally refinished. The front bench was converted to power adjustment using Ford motors and controllers, and all four windows and door locks were converted to power operation. An updated air-conditioning system with under-dashboard vents is fitted, and Dynamat insulation was added to the floors, doors, roof, and sliding sunroof panel.
A set of GM headrests with integrated displays were added to the factory front seat, and refinished burl wood picnic trays with contrasting edging are fitted for the rear seat passengers. A new stereo system was installed, and the leather-lined trunk houses an Infinity stereo amplifier and a 12-disc CD changer. Retractable lap belts were added for all passengers.
The car retains a factory four-spoke steering wheel atop a telescoping column, and the steering column bushings were recently replaced by Bentley San Francisco. Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer with 5,500-rpm redline, a combination oil pressure and water temperature gauge, an amperage gauge, and a fuel-level gauge. Just over 97k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, with true mileage unknown.
The Mark IX was the first production Jaguar to receive the 3.8-liter variant of the XK inline-six. This example was rebuilt by XKs Unlimited at the time of the initial restoration in the early 2000s and is equipped with twin SU carburetors and a factory air cleaner housing. Aluminum engine surfaces and chrome hardware have been polished, and cooling is handled by an aluminum radiator with an electric fan. Services performed by Bentley San Francisco in 2014 included a repair of the fan, a timing chain adjustment , and replacement of the thermostat, starter, and oil pump at 97k miles.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a rebuilt GM-sourced TH700R4 automatic transmission. The ladder chassis was refinished by XKs Unlimited. The included documentation contains more than 400 pages of records.
