This 1959 Jaguar MK IX is a left-hand-drive saloon that was acquired in 2018 by the current owner, Monterey Touring Vehicles of Monterey, California, and subsequently was added to their rental fleet. Finished in white over black leather upholstery, the car is powered by a replacement 3.8-liter inline-six paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Equipment incudes four-wheel disc brakes, power steering, a sunroof, Lucas driving lamps, rear-seat picnic tables, dual SU carburetors, and steel wheels with chrome hubcaps. Work in 2020 included servicing the brakes and the suspension, replacing the exhaust system, engine mounts, and harmonic balancer, as well as repairing the radiator, suspension, and power steering. This MK IX is now offered as part of the Monterey Touring Vehicles collection at no reserve with service records dating back to 2015 and a clean California title.
Front-end body panels were replaced and the bodywork was repainted the current shade of white in 2015 by Soscol Body Shop of Napa, California. Exterior details include a sunroof, Lucas front driving lamps, fender-mounted side mirrors, and rear wheel spats. Various paint chips, dents, scratches, cracks, and areas of pitting on the brightwork can be seen.
Gray-painted steel 16″ wheels wear Jaguar-branded hubcaps and are mounted with whitewall tires. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs that were fitted with a replacement reservoir, calipers, pistons, and hoses in 2020 by W.O. Bentley Repairs of Royal Oaks, California. Additional work performed at that time included repairing the front suspension and replacing the bushings, overhauling the parking brake with replacement calipers, and also fixing the power-steering system.
The cabin houses two rows of bench seats trimmed in black leather upholstery with color-coordinated carpeting. Woodgrain trim extends from the dashboard to the tops of the door panels, and amenities consist of a Jaguar-branded push-button AM radio, folding rear-seat picnic tables, a locking glovebox, and a passenger-side grab handle. Splitting on the front-seat bottom is evident along with cracking veneer, a tear on the right-rear door panel, and worn carpeting in the driver’s footwell.
A four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a central instrument panel housing Smiths gauges that include a 120-mph speedometer, a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock, auxiliary readouts, and a Sunpro temperature gauge mounted under the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 80k miles, approximately 500 of which have been added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 3.8L inline-six is a replacement unit that features dual SU carburetors and sends power to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. Work in 2020 included repairing the radiator, adjusting the carburetors, refreshing the ignition system, and replacing the engine mounts, harmonic balancer, radiator hoses, and exhaust system. Corrosion is noted in the engine bay.
