Registered in the United Kingdom, the Mk IX presented here was driven into a garage approximately 20 years ago, locked up, and has not seen any road use since. Its overall appearance is considerably better than would be expected of a car that has remained untouched for two decades and, given its present condition, it is an excellent candidate for restoration. The body is very straight, finished in grey, and is fitted with all correct chrome trim components. As might be expected, certain signs of oxidation and corrosion are evident. The interior likewise exhibits signs of ageing although it presents remarkably well and the seats appear to be in reasonable condition. The Mk IX seems to be fitted with its proper automatic transmission although the quality of the motor and drivability of the car have not been determined. Overall, the car is highly original and even retains its original spare tyre and a complete set of tools.

Unrestored, largely original, and fitted with the powerful 220-horsepower, 3.8-litre engine, this particular Mk IX offers an exceptional opportunity for restoration and continued enjoyment of one the earliest European sports saloons.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
