Auction description:
Vintage Motor Cars At Meadow Brook Hall
5 August 2006
Lot 253
1959 Jaguar C-Type Replica
To be auctioned on Saturday, August 5, 2006
High Bid of $75,000
Chassis no. 771577

A Beautifully Executed Alloy Bodied Recreation by Proteus with Less Than 5,400 Miles From New

3,422cc double overhead camshaft straight six-cylinder engine with two SU carburetors, four-speed manual gearbox, front independent suspension with double wishbones, rear live axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 96"

The C-Type presented here is a replica originally manufactured by Proteus Sports Cars Ltd. for Brian Stickland of Manchester, England. It was sold to Barnclay M. Armitage in Portland, Oregon, and was acquired by the vendor in 1997.

This replica does not just look the part, as every effort was made to make the car sound and perform just as the originals do. Under the bonnet is a tuned 1959 Jaguar XK 150 engine with D-Type style cams. The cylinder head was ported and polished to provide a competitive 9:1 compression ratio without restricting flow. Feeding the powerplant are two HD8 SU carburetors mated to a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. The alloy body is beautifully finished in light blue and is nicely complemented by 16 inch wire wheels shod with Pirelli radial tires. The interior is fitted with black leather with the drivers seat modified to provide air operated adjustable lumbar support.

The fit and finish on this example is outstanding in every respect. A joy to drive, the Proteus built C-Type replica offered here is a car that anyone can enjoy and do so at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. Since being built this example has only covered less than 5,400 miles and is ready for many, many more.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
