Car to be at auction 3/14
www.rmauctions.com/lots/lot.cfm

Auction description:
Lot 191
1951 Jaguar Mark V 3½-Litre Drophead Coupe
To be auctioned on Saturday, March 8, 2014
Without Reserve
$50,000 - $70,000

Chassis no. 647365
Engine no. Z3279
Body no. DH1565
Gearbox no. SH9006

Offered from the estate of Harold Allsop
The most desirable Mark V variant
Matching numbers with original tools
Owned by an enthusiast for 54 years
Carefully restored to drive and enjoy

Harold Allsop, of Willowdale, Ontario, was just that sort of man, which explains the presence of this 3½-Litre Drophead Coupe in his stable for many years. As his daughter, Heather, put it, "He bought this car in 1959 because he wanted a family car, as he knew that his children would soon outgrow his two-passenger Cord. He began to restore it, but it took time away from the Cord, which was the true love of his life, and so he put it away. When he retired at the age of 70, he began [again] to restore it, and every cent of his old age pension went into that car."

The meticulous body-off restoration included a complete renewal of the frame, all of the mechanical components, the body, and electrical components. Allsop himself fabricated all-new, correct ash wood frames for the doors, and he ordered proper canvas top material and leather upholstery. He put all of the skills, tools, resources, and friends from decades of working on "hobby cars" into this restoration. He was literally within days of completing the work when he fell ill in 2011, and as he was unable to continue, his son, Peter, finished the project to its present condition.

The car, beautifully finished in Black over a red leather interior with a tan top, has been restored to original specifications, with the exception of a non-original electric fuel pump. The original three-inch-body fuel pump is included with the car, along with a rebuild kit for it, as well as original owner's and shop manuals, color dealer brochures, a vintage leaping Jaguar hood ornament, and an original-installed radio, which has not been restored or installed. The tool kit inside the boot lid is complete save for two wrenches. Black wheel covers and blackwall tires provide a wonderful, sinister air, setting this car apart from other dainty Jaguars of the era.

This is a wonderful example of the most desirable Mark V Jaguar, which has been restored for the personal enjoyment of the enthusiast and family that loved it for 54 years.

Sellers description:

1951 JAGUAR MARK V DROPHEAD COUPE

Finished in a lustrous black and red leather interior, this 1951 Jaguar Mark V is simply exquisite. A no expense spared restoration has been performed. Having spent the majority of its life in sunny California, this 1951 Jaguar Mark V is in remarkable condition having accumulated only 53,030 miles. The 3.5-liter straight six-cylinder runs beautifully and is a testament to the legend of Jaguar powerplants. The interior is appointed with rich red leather and elegant wood trim; a truly inviting place to enjoy one of the most admired automobiles ever created. The Mark V was produced in extremely limited numbers with only 977 Drophead Coupes constructed over the three-year production run. This low production is reflected in the painstaking craftsmanship employed in the building on each jewel-like Mark V. Few automobiles have ever received such attention to detail and the constant discovery of each new intricacy makes looking at this car a joy. The Jaguar Mark V already enjoys a loyal and passionate following with values showing consistent strength year after year, making this automobile an extremely attractive investment consideration. Bid with confidence - for over 40 years Daniel Schmitt & Co. has built an unrivaled reputation by uniting the world's finest motorcars with those who treasure them.
