Car to be at auction 2/12
www.bonhams.com/usa/auction/19680/lot/345/

Auction description:
Sale 19680 - The Scottsdale Sale, 19 Jan 2012
Arizona, Scottsdale
Lot No: 345
1951 Jaguar MkV Drop Head Coupe
Chassis no. 647349
Engine no. Z3232
*3,485cc straight six
*126hp
*4-speed manual transmission
*One of 1,005 produced
*Stunning, graceful styling
*Three-position top

The left hand drive 3.5 liter Mk V drophead on offer was likely the subject of an older restoration. Resplendent in Ivory with Pale Blue hides. Little history is known about the car, but it is recorded that it was owned by Frank Weigel in 1981 and had been, prior to the vendor's recent acquisition, with the same keeper for the previous 15 years. MkV Dropheads have been gaining in popularity, and for good reason--it has the grace of a Bentley, the opulence of a Rolls-Royce and the pace of, well, a Jaguar.

Estimate: US$110,000 - 140,000

Goodwood Members' Meeting

*One of 1,005 dropheads produced

*Left-hand drive

*Three-position convertible hood

*Purchased by the Key Collection in 2012

*Restored since acquisition

The announcement of Jaguar's first new generation post-war saloon - the Mark VII - at the 1950 Motor show signalled the end for the Mark V, production ceasing in June 1951 after slightly fewer than 10,500 had been built, only 1,005 of which were dropheads like that offered here.

Little is known about this left-hand drive 3½-litre Mark V but it is recorded that it was owned by one Frank Weigel in 1981 and had been, prior to the preceding owner's acquisition, with the same keeper for the previous 15 years. The Key Collection purchased the car at Bonhams' Scottsdale Sale in January 2012 (Lot 345), since when it has been restored by them. Mark V dropheads have been gaining in popularity recently and for good reason, as these beautiful cars epitomise Jaguar's traditional virtues of grace, space and pace. Should the vehicle remain in the UK, local import taxes of 5% will be added to the hammer price.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
