Car to be at auction 7/14
www.coys.co.uk/auction.php
Auction description:
Lot 344 - 1949 Jaguar MK5
Estimate: £38,000 - £48,000
Registration Number: 388UYF
Chassis Number: 647052
This 1949 Mark V convertible is most notable for the fact that it retains its original paint and leather and is also one of the lowest mileage examples that exist. The first owner was one of the earliest Jaguar importers in the United States. He fell in love with the car when it arrived in Texas and retained it until his death in the seventies. He was notable for retaining in his own private collection of various cars that he imported including excellent examples of MG, Jaguar and Mercedes Benz. He was also one of the first importers of Volkswagen and Porsche in the US as well as being a collector of pre-war classics. He owned various vintage Bentleys including what is probably the best blown 4.5 litre, ex Wolf Barnato.
The mileage on this Jaguar is certified as correct by Robert Guest the well known Texas dealer who was entrusted by Howard Sluyter to sell his complete collection shortly before Sluyters death.
The car was sold at that time to The Texas Museum of transportation who did not store it very well. It suffered from moth which destroyed the hood and the carpets which have been replaced. On top of this, the car received a new radiator core, a total re-wire and a total brake overhaul; however, as it is still mechanically in good condition, no further restoration was needed.
This car with only 42,598 miles on the clock, drives just as a low mileage car should and was comprehensively prepared for road use on behalf of the British owner who bought the car from Robert Guest who sold it for both Mr Sluyter and the Texas Museum of transportation.
The car retains the bulk of its original tools which are stored in the special tray in the boot lid.

Hi,
Most of the interior is a far cry from the original! Original Suede Green Rexine can be seen in the scuttle (kick) panels, but the seats,m door trim, rear trim is totally non-original, non-Jaguar colour. Also the radio console and rear ashtrays are fabricated, non original objects, as is the gearbox shifter stick. The paint is claimed to be original, could be mostly "Dove Grey" Domolac/Zofelac cellulose paint or similar.
Cheers,
Pekka T.

1950 Jaguar MK 5,
This model was delivered to Los Angeles, USA in 1950 and subsequently spent most of its time in Switzerland. Thoroughly examined by our Jaguar Classic experts.
This very rare and beautiful Mark V 3,5 ltr. is completely unrestored and in an amazing condition. The underbody has been carefully dry ice blasted in our JAGUAR LAND ROVER CLASSIC CENTRE with the result that the MK V is rust-free and unwelded. This is due to its climatically healthy former home. The interior is also completely original and has a fantastic patina. The tool kit in the trunk lid is also available. The corresponding Heritage Certificate shows "Matching Numbers and Colors". Everything on the vehicle is fully functional. After extensive technical inspection and renewal of the fuel pump, fuel line and tyres, the vehicle has been driven in a demanding Classic Cars Rally without any problems. A great and rare piece of JAGUAR automobile history.

Yes, Pekka is quite right. the interior is not original as Suede Green simply isn't that colour. It looks more Olive than Suede Green. Also the carpets are grey (and not the right pattern) when they would have been Suede Green as well, so they aren't original either. The centre console is definitely an aftermarket mistake and looks hideous. No doubt it was added when the interior was replaced. Pekka is right to point out the gear-change lever - who would know what type of gearbox it was attached to?
The paintwork looks as though it could be a very time-worn Lavender Grey. The original cellulose paint doesn't fare well over time and always looks dirty. I know how it should look as I've spent an age researching the original colour for my MKIV.
It is unfair to call a car "Original" when it clearly isn't but what can one do?

Follow up!
When did Jaguar start chrome plating the air cleaners on their cars?
Answer: Never!
More indications of a non-original car.

And what's more......
If you look at the photo's from 2011 to 2014 & 2020 you will see that the carpet has been replaced, as has the gaiter around the gear leaver! How dishonest to claim that the car is "unrestored" and "original"! It makes me so cross that people can be so intentionally misleading.

Hi,
pls don't get me wrong, it's a nice car in lots of ways and I like the fact it still has SOME original bits in the interior (mostly the scuttle trim) BUT the hub caps are not painted as they should be and I could supply it with the correct lens for the tool tray light as well as a few other things.
The hood (fabric top) looks good when erected, even if it's missing the chrome beads and the hood enveIope, but it does not seem to fold down the way it is supposed to? I would really like to see someone reverse that car into a parking space with the hood (top) down! :D
