Car to be at auction 3/12
www.rmauctions.com/CarDetails.cfm

Auction description:
Amelia Island
Saturday, March 10, 2012
1948 Jaguar Mark IV Drophead Coupe

LOT: 155
Estimate:
$100,000-$120,000 US
Chassis No. C637139
• Concours-quality restoration completed in 2000
• One of 376 3.5-liter export-market Mark IVs built
• The first postwar Jaguar model and the first offered with LHD

According to the car's accompanying Heritage Certificate, this Jaguar was originally sold through the Hoffman, California Jaguar dealership in 1948. It was finished in black paintwork with beige leather and a sand three-position top. Prior to acquisition by the current owner in 2002, it was given a body-off-frame restoration, with all mechanicals restored and overhauled, new wooden body framing installed, any deteriorated body work replaced and new Connolly leather upholstery fitted. The electrical wiring was also addressed.

In its current ownership, the car has been properly and regularly maintained and exercised and remains in virtual concours-quality condition, as confirmed by a recent inspection by an RM Car Specialist. It represents English motoring elegance at its best, and with precious few ever produced, especially in the most desirable left-hand drive, 3.5-liter form, it is truly a rare find.

As seen on the pictures it is RHD, not LHD.

Hi, good catch Mateusz, BUT the chassis number IS a LHD chassis number, so not so sure about what happened, was it converted later when perhaps reimported in the UK or something? Anyways well done, or then for some really odd reason a RHD car with a LHD chassis number. Too bad the photo with the number plate is too small so the other numbers (body & engine) could be seen. Oh well a JHT certificate would tell more...

I was informed that the car was converted in New Zealand.

The future buyer should know that the car was converted to RHD during its restoration taken before 1999. Mark IV saloon - 612602 - was donor car for the rebuild of 637139 Drophead (for example, engine is from MKIV saloon)

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
