A Production Record Trace Certificate from Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust shows that this car was despatched on 7th May 1948. That certificate quotes engine number SL3013. The original supplying distributor was Hoffman of New York, to whom the car was despatched on 19th May 1948. A plate on this car indicates restoration by Eric Vignes of Villiers en Lieu in France and a note on file records expenditure since acquisition in 1998 of £7,331. This car is attractively liveried in Midnight Blue with red leather upholstery, red carpets and brown hood. Driving equipment includes Lucas headlamps and spot lamps. The car is offered with an old style V5 document, various expired MoT certificates, (the last to December 2008), an old French immatraculation document (7917 YF 78) and, following retention of a private number plate, will be offered with a new Swansea V5C registration document.

1948 Jaguar MK IV 3 ½ Litre Cabriolet, Chassis no. 637188
This left-hand drive example was delivered new in France, remaining there until 1998 when it returned to the UK. Described as always rust free, the car was totally restored in France by well known specialist Eric Vignes and carries his brass nameplate. Chassis '637188' is very original and comes complete with many rarely seen original fittings, including a wonderful kit of tools contained within their original tray. In 1998, when the car was sold to the UK, the new owner spent another €10,000 with Davenport Cars on a further mechanical overhaul to make it fully suitable for daily use. Since then the car has been fastidiously maintained and is reported to be in perfect working order, driving absolutely as it should. Wanting only for a new owner to enjoy it, this superb motor car – the ultimate Jaguar of its day – is offered with JDHT certificate and French Carte Grise. It is rare to find these models in such superb condition, in view of high labour costs involved in restorations particularly to such a standard, Bonhams therefore recommend close inspection of this very superior example.
Sold for €92,000 inclusive of Buyer's Premium

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
