    Lot Number 0005
    Sale Number 1863
Lot Title 1949 JAGUAR MARK V FOUR-DOOR SALOON
    Estimate 6,000 - 12,000
    U.S. dollars
Special Notice This lot is offered without reserve.
Saleroom Notice Please note that this car is a left hand drive model, not a right drive model as stated within the catalogue description
Pre-lot Text PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF MR. JOHN W. STRAUS
Lot Description 1949 JAGUAR MARK V FOUR-DOOR SALOON
    Chassis No 627032
Cotswold blue with grey leather interior
Engine: 125 hp pushrod overhead valve inline six-cylinder, 3,485cc, dual SU carburetors; Gearbox: 4-speed manual; Suspension: front, independent with torsion bars, rear, live axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs; Brakes: four-wheel hydraulically actuated drums. Left hand drive.

The example on offer here is a 1949 righthand drive UK-model four-door saloon with the larger 3 1/2 liter engine, one of only 3,124 built to this specification. With 125 brake horsepower compared with the 102 bhp of the 2 1/2 liter six, it is much more desirable and satisfying driver than the smaller-engined Mark V and is nearly as good a performer as the later, but heavier, MK VI saloon with the more powerful XK engine. Rare and very desirable, this Jaguar Mark V saloon has been stored for many years. Largely complete and sound, it is a potentially rewarding restoration project. When completed it will preserve an example of a rarely seen and important interim Jaguar model that laid the groundwork both technically and aesthetically for the resounding success of the Jaguar XK 120 and MK VI.
    WITHOUT RESERVE

Typical inaccuracies of auction advertising; the car is definitely a LEFT hand drive US delivery model, not a right hand UK model, and may be compared to the Mark VII (7), not VI (6). There was no Mark VI.

This car is offered at $10,000 in Lynchburg Virginia on Facebook.

    Original gray interior somewhat torn.

Engine reported to turn freely, but not in running condition.

The interior is not "Grey" that is a perfect factory original "Pale Blue" interior. :+1

    Seller's Description

100% original, Mark V saloon jag 1949. Bought this thinking I would have time to restore and not the case. I had the carbs sent off and professionally rebuilt, engine turns over fine. Ordered all parts from England to work on and never did. Comes with jag emblem, all gaskets, rotar, cap, points, plugs etc. will need to be towed.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
