1949 JAGUAR MK V SALOON

REBUILT OVER LAST 8 YRS & UNLEADED HEAD

Lot 76
Status SOLD
Estimate £13000 - 14000
Hammer Price £11500.00
Mileage 03224
Colour RED/BLACK
Trim Colour GREY
Chassis No 620588
Engine No T6116
Registration KXK 190
CC 3485
M.O.T APRIL 2005
Postwar, under their post-SS and politically necessary new company name of Jaguar Cars Limited, three essentially prewar designs of pushrod engine were used, the 1767cc 4-cylinder power unit from nearby Standard and Jaguar's own 2.5-litre (actually of 2664cc capacity) and 3.3-litre (3485cc) sixes. The transmission used by William Lyons for his MkIV was a 4-speed manual gearbox and the brakes were mechanical until the MkV replacement arrived in 1948.
Produced in saloon or drophead form, with 2664cc or 3485cc engine options, the superseded model's bodywork was transformed by the improved forward forward vision and the addition of most attractive rear wheel covering spats. The most important improvements, however, were to be found beneath the skin, with independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes which transformed the driveability.
The entrant of this 1949-built MkV tells us that his very stylish saloon has been fully rebuilt over the last eight years, with all the bills in the car's history file substantiating and detailing the work carried out. More recently, a change has been made to an unleaded fuel accommodating cylinder head, the 3.5-litre 6-cylinder motor reportedly being in good order, while KXK 190 is said by the owner to an excellent driving car. The chassis and the body are said to be in good condition, with the red over black paintwork and the grey trimmed interior both good too. The current MOT test certificate will not need renewing until next April.

Fuel Type: Petrol
1949 JAGUAR MARK V - 3485cc £28,000 - £30,000
ESTIMATE £28,000 - £30,000

Chassis number 620588 - PART OF THE RMP COLLECTION this particular matching numbers Jaguar Mark V has a build date of July 12th 1949 and was supplied by Henlys of London being first registered September 7th 1949. This particular example was originally Lavender Grey with Blue Trim and we have a resume of the known history and works undertaken from the vendor in the history file. The Mark V was introduced to distributors and the press on 30 September 1948 and launched on 27 October 1948 at the London Motor Show at the same time as the XK120, with which it shared a stand. The XK120 stole the show, however, the Mark V would vastly outsold the XK120 throughout its production. The Mark V styling followed pre-war Jaguar lines with upright chrome grille with the option of a leaping Jaguar radiator cap mascot. The wheels were 16", significantly smaller than the 18" wheels on the previous MK IV. From the side, a distinctive styling touch on the saloon was a "tuck in" curve at the base of the rear quarter window following the curved profile of the side glass, a feature retained on many subsequent models. Rear-wheel spats were standard.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
