"Sleek and smart, the distinctive lines of the Jaguar Saloon make an immediate appeal to the connoisseur of fine motor cars, whilst a few moments at the wheel are sufficient to convince the most experienced motorist that here is a car with performance to give delight to the most fastidious" (Jaguar sales brochure, 1946)
Following an emergency board meeting in March 1945, Sir William Lyons' SS Jaguar concern understandably lost its prefix initials. Re-launched following the cessation of hostilities as Jaguar Cars, the company - in common with most of its peers - felt that it had little choice but to recommence production with its pre September 1939 model range (especially given the increasing pressure on steel supplies exerted by the government's export-or-die drive). Luckily for the Coventry concern, this entailed trying to sell a line up of 1.5 and larger 2.5 / 3.5 litre engined cars that still enjoyed an enviable reputation for excellent performance, good road manners and well appointed interiors. Retrospectively known as MKIVs, the two bigger capacity six-cylinder, ohv variants sat on a 120" wheelbase, their well-insulated ladder frame chassis being equipped with beam / live axle semi-elliptic sprung suspension and Girling mechanical brakes. Benefiting from a new hypoid bevel rear axle, they carried less chrome than their interwar counterparts but were still affectionately known as 'Wardour Street Bentleys'.
Finished in Gunmetal Grey with Forest Green upholstery, this particular right-hand drive example is variously described by the vendor as being in "very good" (four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, chassis, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres), "restored" (3485cc OHV straight-six) or "new" (interior trim) condition. Dispatched by the factory to distributors Brylaw of Melbourne (Australia) on September 6th 1948, it entered the current Dutch ownership during 2000. Apparently treated to Ç42,591 (approximately ú30,000) worth of restoration work since then, it is said to have benefited from an extensive overhaul of its mechanics, electrics, chassis and body in 2002 (Ç24,409), a re-trimmed interior some twelve months later (Ç11,682) and an engine rebuild just last year (Ç6,500). Believed but not warranted to have covered 82,000 miles from new (with just 2,500 of those being added over the last six years), the seller considers the MKIV to be "very original" and to "drive very smoothly". Highly appealing, this elegant 1940s Jaguar is offered for sale with a Dutch certificate of roadworthiness (expires November 2006) and Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Production Record Trace Certificate. Details
Offered here is a rare, top of the range, 3.5 Saloon of 1948 vintage, which was originally supplied to Brylaws Motors Melbourne who were the Australian agents. The car was dispatched on the 6th September 1948, having been completed on the 24th August. The car eventually found its way to the Netherlands, via New Zealand and once in the Netherlands (2004/2005) it was subjected to a nut and bolt restoration, which is detailed in the history file.
The car was acquired by the vendor in 2008 but he finds that he has little time to use it and other Jaguars he has collected and has reluctantly decided to sell.
Finished in silver with green leather, the car is in first class condition and is complete with a heritage certificate and copies of bills amounting to well over £45000. The vendor has recently spent some £4100 on recomissioning works and upgrades at Michael Hibbard Motor Engineers. This bill is also included in the file.
A rare opportunity in this, the 75th anniversary of Jaguar/SS Cars. Not to be missed by the true enthusiast.
Barons are pleased to be able to offer another superb example of the Jaguar 3.5 Saloon after breaking all records with the example we sold in December 2009. It is most unusual to find these cars for sale but to have two at the same venue, which were both originally supplied to Australia and both finished in silver, is quite extraordinary.
Estimate £42500-50000

Car now offered at:
www.classic-trader.com/uk/cars/listing/jaguar/mk-iv/mk-iv-3-5-litre/1948/277949
Le Riche Automobile, Jersey, UK
1948 Mk IV 3,5 Litre
Chassis number 612888
Engine number S 3522
This fine 3½ litre model has a certified build date of 24 August 1948 and was shipped to Australian Jaguar distributor, Brylaw Motors Pty Ltd, in Melbourne in September of that year. It was in Australia until 1993, when the vehicle was re-registered in New Zealand. Here it remained until around October 2000 (a NZ vehicle inspection report shows a recorded mileage of 79,518 miles at this point). A comprehensive, specialist restoration - body & engine rebuild - took place between 2002 and 2005 in the Netherlands, and the car was then imported and re-registered in the UK in 2008. Its most recent travels saw it with a new owner in Jersey in May 2010.
As part of the comprehensive (and documented) restoration work of 2002-2005, the engine was rebuilt and has subsequently required no further major attention, having simply been properly and regularly maintained, which has included further cylinder head work and fuel tank restoration. The car runs and drives very well, benefitting from the fitment of electric power steering in 2013.
Similarly, the restored bodywork remains in splendid condition having been well looked after, with some additional work on the cars bonnet. It has good chrome and wire wheels. The silver grey paintwork is particularly fine and suits the car’s flowing lines very well. The interior (upholstery, carpets and headlining) was fully re-trimmed as part of the restoration work and remains in excellent condition. The car’s wooden fittings – dash, door cappings etc. – are in very good condition.
This is a particularly fine example of a 3½ litre Mark IV Jaguar which, since its arrival in Jersey, has had on-going work to ensure it is a reliable and usable driver. It needs for nothing and is equally ready to use for gentle local driving or tours in the UK or mainland Europe.
The car is currently Jersey registered and we can assist / advise with shipping and importing processes if required. Any import duties and transport costs would be additional to the price listed.
