Car to be at auction 7/11
www.coys.co.uk/auction.php

Auction description:
Lot 141 - 1947 Jaguar Mk IV 3.5 litre Saloon
141 - 1947 Jaguar Mk IV 3.5 litre Saloon
Estimate: £38,000 - £45,000
Registration Number: XOW 798
Chassis Number: 611549

This fine example, fitted with the largest available engine, the 3.5 litre, started its life in South Africa; it was purchased by the vendors late Father in 1984, giving it just two owners from new. Early history is vague but it is believed the car was scarcely used, with the result that it now shows a recorded mileage of just 57000 miles from new, which would be among the lowest of all survivors. Since the car was purchased in 1984 over £20,000 has been spent. With an engine rebuild by David Davenport, the vendor now describes the engine and transmission as being in excellent condition.

Finished in Green with a beige interior, this fine saloon is in excellent condition . Documentation supplied includes a V5 document, an MoT certificate valid until June 2012 , various bills and receipts, and photographs demonstrating the restoration work.

This particular example - chassis 611549 - was supplied new to South Africa. Resident in Cape Town for a while - as evidenced by the 'Robb Motors' plaque still affixed to its dashboard - the 3.5 litre saloon is understood to have had just two UK keepers since being repatriated during 1959. Found to be remarkably well preserved despite a period of barn storage when it entered the current family ownership in 1984, the Jaguar was nonetheless stripped pending an extensive restoration which would take some twenty years to complete. A garage proprietor by profession, the vendor's father undertook much of the work himself. Though invoices on file show that the car was given a professional respray in its original colour by Bodyshop UK of Weston Coyney and also benefited from the ministrations of marque specialists J.A. Garages Ltd of Leek, Staffordshire and Davenport Cars Ltd of Tetworth, Bedfordshire. As well as supplying numerous small parts, the latter was responsible for 'debugging' the car and overhauling its original engine during late 2003.

Pleasingly retaining what appears to be its original green leather upholstery (complemented by a new headlining, replacement carpets and refinished wood veneers), 'XOW 789' is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual gearbox, bodywork and interior trim, while he rates the paintwork and electrical equipment as "good". Believed but not warranted to have covered some 57,000 miles from new, the handsome sports saloon boasts such niceties as a leaping Jaguar mascot, stainless steel exhaust, boot-mounted tool kit (near complete), opening windscreen, sunroof and auxiliary driving lamps. Riding on painted wire wheels, this appealing 'Big Cat' is offered for sale with assorted restoration photographs, sundry related invoices (J.A. Garages Ltd, Bodyshop UK, Davenport Cars Ltd), historic class (free) road fund licence and current MOT certificate valid until May 2012.
