It was in 1956 that Jaguar Cars founder, Bill Lyons, later to become Sir William Lyons, launched a new generation of more compact saloons, discarding the separate chassis and body in favour of a unitary construction bodyshell, the first of a long line being the 2.4-litre Mk1. A year later, an additional 3.4 version was offered and, by the late 1950s, an even more rapid, disc-braked 3.8 Mk2 appeared. From 1967 the legendary 3442cc XK engine was also employed to power the restyled 340 four-door saloon with minor specifiction modifications.
This righthand drive 340 first left the historic, though soon to be closed Browns Lane works in Coventry in 1968. Included with the four-door saloon, which runs on steel wheels, are an original green logbook as well as many receipts detailing refurbishment work carried out. The original radio is still in place and while steering wheel and speedometer have been changed, the original items are both included with the car which has been waxoyled at some time. The 94,228 miles displayed when entered for this sale is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total mileage for the car from new.
The bodyshell, above and below, is described currently as being in good shape and both green paintwork and beige ambla trim are also said to be good. The 3.4-litre six is reportedly in good order as is the four-speed manual gearbox. The current MOT certificate will be valid until next January.

    Auction description:
    Lot : 41
    1968 Jaguar 340
    Estimate:
    NOT SOLD
    Registration No: PVF184F
    Chassis No: 1J51647DN
    Engine No: 7D52079-8
    CC: 3442
    Colour: B.R.G.
    Trim Colour: Cream
    MOT: May 2011
Finished in British Racing Green with Cream Ambla upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its bodywork, paintwork, electrical equipment and interior trim, while he rates the engine and four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox as "excellent". First registered on 13th May 1968, 'PVF 184F' dates from the last year of Jaguar 340 production and had undergone a good deal of restoration by the time it entered the current ownership via our October 2004 Buxton auction. Since then it is understood to have benefited from the following new components: radiator, stainless steel exhaust, clutch master / slave cylinders, front / rear springs, carpets, gearbox mounts, front ball joints, coolant hoses and three tyres (two front, one spare). Attention to the electrics has seen it fitted with a replacement dynamo and voltage regulator and also given a H4 headlight conversion. Treated to a full respray and thorough brake system overhaul (including new front callipers) not to mention annual servicing and some engine set-up work by Vicarage, this nicely presented sports saloon is offered for sale with a current JEC Valuation Certificate (for £12,000), MOT certificate valid until May 2011 and historic class (free) road tax valid until October 2010.
