The Jaguar S-type sports saloon is finding more and more favour with collectors in recent years. Offering a much better ride that its live-axle predecessor, the Mk.II, the independently sprung S-type epitomises the Jaguar ethos of Grace, Pace and Space. This simply gorgeous car has a believed genuine mileage of just 57530 miles, embellished by a meticulous specialist overhaul which accounts for some ú10,000 being lavished on this unusually solid example. Boasting the highly desirable specification of a manual/overdrive gearbox, wire wheels and a sunroof, this capable sports saloon offers classic high-speed motoring at a very accessible price."

Car returned to auction in '07
    www.classicauctions.co.uk/lotdetail.php

    Auction description:
Finished in metallic grey with red leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (electrical equipment, interior trim, paintwork, wheels / tyres), "very good" (four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, chassis, bodywork) or "excellent" (3.8 litre engine) condition. Entering the current ownership via our February 2002 Buxton auction, 'LOH 884F' is said to have appeared on Channel Five's 'Fifth Gear' programme not long afterwards. Treated to a colour change as part of the extensive restoration it underwent between 2002 and 2003, other areas to receive attention apparently included the engine (overhauled / rebored), overdrive unit (replaced), interior (refurbished with new headlining / carpets / folding sunroof etc) and steering (upgraded using a power-assisted rack and pinion system). Riding on wire wheels, this well-specified S-type is offered for sale with "paperwork from the late 1980s", "recent bills for thousands since 2002", "Fifth Gear programme CD" and MOT certificate valid until July 2008.

Car to return to auction 10/09

    Auction description:
    Lot : 13
    1967 Jaguar S-Type 3.8 Litre
    From the Robert Dean collection
    Estimate:
    £6000 - 7000
    Registration No: LOH884F
    Chassis No: IB59508DN
    Engine No: 7B64236-8
    CC: 3781
    Colour: Met. Grey
    Trim Colour: Red
    MOT: June 10

Finished in metallic grey with red leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, interior trim and bodywork (though, he notes that there are "a few bubbles on the front wing / crow's feet"). The paintwork is understood to be "good save for one or two small marks", while the electrical equipment is apparently "all working apart from the right-hand fuel sender". Not long after appearing on Channel Five's `Fifth Gear' programme in 2002, `LOH 884F' underwent a colour change as part of an extensive restoration. Then the engine was overhauled, the overdrive unit replaced, the interior refurbished with new headlining, carpets and folding sunroof, and the steering upgraded using a power-assisted rack. Since entering the current ownership via our November 2007 auction, the saloon has been treated to a stainless-steel exhaust, replacement heated rear windscreen, new rear springs / dampers and, just before this sale, a new set of MWS wire wheels. This well-specified S-type is accompanied by paperwork from the late 1980s, "bills for thousands since 2002", Fifth Gear programme CD, replacement fuel gauge sender unit, spare wire wheel and MOT certificate valid until June 2010. "It is a fabulous touring/sports car and with the full-length sunroof gives you open-top motoring with no leaks or draughts" says the vendor.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
