M.O.T MARCH 2004
In 1956 a new generation of more compact Jaguar saloons came to market, employing unitary-construction rather than a separate chassis and body. Initially, that Mk1 2.4 Jag was powered by a 2483cc 6-cylinder engine, which was a short-stroke version of the Coventry firm's already world famous XK power unit. For 1957, however, the 3442cc 6-cylinder engine was also offered in the Mk1 shell. To counter criticism of narrow rear track skittishness and poor rear three-quarters visibility, a wider-tracked, thinner-pillared Mk2 3.4 with 3781cc option hit showrooms from 1959. The S Type was a restyled Mk2 with the added refinement of independent rear suspension resulting in a much smoother ride.
Going under the hammer is a right-hand drive 3.4 S Type saloon, which, the West Country vendor tells us, has only had two previous owners in the believed genuine 47,347 total miles from new in 1965, the year before Jaguar Cars was sold to BMC. Much recommissioning was carried out by the second owner, following which the car was not used much, although the 3.4 engine, 4-speed gearbox with overdrive and brakes have since been overhauled by specialist Coopercraft. According to the vendor, this is a rust-free and waxoyled example with reportedly very good chassis, which, in his view, has never seen a welding torch. It is beautiful to drive, he says, currently with very good bodywork, good grey paint and blue interior, and with engine and gearbox still in very good order.
PLEASE NOTE: Further to our inspection of this vehicle the estimate has been revised. Please check this on the information on the screen."

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
