Car to be at auction 10/14

Note, VIN is best guess, corrections solicited.

Auction description:
Lot 218 - 1962 Jaguar Mk II 3.8- Coombs Specification - 24,000 miles
Estimate: £15,000 - £20,000
Registration Number: SVS 344
Chassis Number: 16D730DN

This car was built in England in 1962. The Guildford branch of John Coombs did race modifications to customer specifications before they exported it (unregistered) to Jaguar dealers 'Sagers Limited' of Bulawayo, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). It was a special order for their customer, the Rhodesian land consortium of W.C.Dobson Z.A. Ltd.

The car was used for 'Farmer Club' rallying, mainly in South Africa. The visible modifications still existing are the pre-filters (sand catchers), head infilling, heat dissipaters and sun tint screen. The power steering was removed, and the compression ratio was lowered to make the car more competitive due to the low quality of fuel in Africa, and also, for ease of starting due to the heat. The rear off-side leaf spring has ride height adjustment for circuit stages.

The car covered 18,516 miles during its life in Africa, bearing the Transvaal registration of KHB 810T, (the African tax disc is still on the screen) and was put back to road specification in 1989 and returned to Great Britain in 1990.

Upon its return it was put on display at The Bexhill 100 Festival of Motoring (again still visible on the windscreen) and since then has covered only around 6,000 miles. Its total mileage from leaving the factory to date is 24,241.
Purchased from Coys in 1994 the then vendor put it back for sale with us in 2008 when it was sold to the current vendor.

Since his ownership the vendor has covered a mere 1,500 miles. It still has its South African front reflectors and black AA badge. The long range radio Ariel is original.
Offered with a realistic reserve this car is certainly for the Jaguar purist who wishes to bring some friends along for the ride, it is perhaps the ideal choice.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
