Auction description:
Sale 19279 - Bonhams Oxford, Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia, 5 Mar 2011
Oxford
Lot No: 216
1961 Jaguar Mk2 3.4-Litre Saloon
Registration no. 941 KWL
Chassis no. 153241/DN
Engine no. KG5823-8
Sold for £32,200 inclusive of Buyer's Premium
The example offered here was treated to a comprehensive programme of restoration and upgrading by Superglaze Restoration Specialists, Lichfield between 1997 and 2000 at a cost of circa £40,000 (see numerous bills on file).
Far too lengthy to reproduce here, a detailed list of all the many improvements accompanies the car together with photographs of the rebuild, which are contained in a presentation album. Close inspection of both is recommended. Highlights include a bare-metal strip-down and repair/replacement of all body panels; rebuilding the 3.4-litre engine to unleaded and 'fast road' specification; Borg & Beck diaphragm clutch; Getrag five-speed manual gearbox; power-assisted steering; up-rated brakes with four-pot front calipers; 'Derek Watson' up-rated front suspension; Koni adjustable dampers all round; electronic ignition and fuel pump; alternator electrics; halogen headlamps; Kenlowe electric fan; 'Coombes' rear wheelarches; 6" chromed wire wheels; electric front windows, seats and mirrors; inertia seat belts; two-speed windscreen wipers; and all new glass with tinted front screen.
Since completion the car has covered only some 7,500 miles and is described as 'on the button', running and driving superbly. Perfectly suited to fast, long-distance touring, it has completed two trips to the South of France and is only offered for sale because the vendor is moving there. Finished in Flamenco Red pearlescent metallic with doeskin leather interior, the latter featuring Moto-Lita steering wheel and 4-speaker stereo system, this sensibly upgraded and highly desirable 'modern classic' is offered with the aforementioned restoration invoices and records, current road fund licence, MoT to July 2011 and Swansea V5 registration document.
