Car offered at:

www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/jaguar/mk-2/2165391.html

Seller's description

Location: Santa Barbara, California, 93120

VIN #: J65P223901BW

Mileage: 180,000

Transmission: Auto

Condition: Fair

Offered here is a one-owner California family since new, 1965 Jaguar MK2 / 3.8. The vehicle is currently garaged in Santa Barbara, California.

Below is the daughter's description regarding the history of the vehicle.

My Father bought the Jag in December 1964, it is a 1965 model. The car was purchased new at Jaguar San Bernardino, CA for $ 5,600.00. It was our family car and was always garaged. We lived in Fontana CA, a city about 60 miles West of Palm Springs. My parents stopped using (driving) the car in 1982 or so, and then it sat in the garage until 2002. Around that time I had the Jag towed to Santa Barbara and had Clark Motors get it running again. I've driven it off and on (mostly off), since then. I believe the car is all original except paint and an electronic ignition kit. Headliner is in good condition. The back seat is (intact) and the front seats are quite worn. It has approximately 180,000 miles.

Spokemotors observations:

I did not have the car on a lift, but the car appears solid. The undersides of the doors and the trunk area look to be in very good condition. Most likely from being garaged in a dry Southern California environment since new. Some original tools remain in the trunk. The wood dash is well preserved. I did not drive the car, but the owner started it and moved into position for the photographs. The owner stated that the blue scrape on the driver's side door, is from a scuff from the garage trim color when the owner had parked the car some time in the past.

THE HISTORY

This 1965 Jaguar Mk2 started life as a US market car and is thus left-hand drive. The current owner tells us that up until its arrival in the UK in 2019 it remained in the ownership of one family, originally being used by the husband before going to his wife and then onto their daughter. The family was based in Arizona so the Jaguar remained almost entirely free of any serious corrosion during its life in America.

The 3.8 was imported to the UK in 2019 where the current owner has embarked on a comprehensive restoration along with some upgrades to ensure the Mk2 is more than capable of coping with UK traffic while enhancing its drivability, too. It’s benefitted from a glass-out bare metal respray, a conversion from automatic to four-speed manual with overdrive, had a power-assisted rack and pinion steering set up installed and features upgraded brake discs and callipers. In addition to this the interior has been completely retrimmed in black leather and in combination with the refurbished wood trim looks superb.

The owner is now delighted with the way the car now looks and performs on the road but he’s running out of storage space and has decided to let the Jaguar go to another enthusiast who will no doubt be seduced by its considerable charms.

THE PAPERWORK

There is a selection of paperwork from the car’s time in America and there are comprehensive receipts from the work carried out on the Mk2 since its arrival in the UK. The majority of the mechanical work was undertaken by marque specialists M&C Wilkinson Ltd and there are receipts totalling over £13,000 for the completed works. Invoices detail the automatic to manual conversion, including the reconditioning of the gearbox prior to installation, the power steering rack and pinion conversion, the installation of a new fuel tank, new Koni shock absorbers, a new stainless exhaust system – it really has been treated to the works!

In addition there are invoices for the interior work to the tune of £8,500. Despite its historic status the owner has subjected the Jaguar to an annual MoT test, passing first time both pre- and post-restoration. The current MoT expires in November 2021. There is a V5C in the owner’s name.

THE INTERIOR

The interior of the Mk2 really does present in immaculate condition – hardly surprising as it has been comprehensively restored. The black leather seats and door cards can only be described as in perfect order and fit beautifully and are supplied to the touch. Where the leather restorer has been most clever is in restoring the interior to a new condition without it feeling over restored or too new in feel.

A Derrington steering wheel has been fitted and the wooden dash and door cappings have been stripped back and relacquered and now present in as new condition with a deep lustre to the wood. The headlining is new and looks to be in superb order. All the dials, instruments and switches are in excellent condition and a period Becker radio completes the picture.

Overall the interior has a wonderful ambiance and would be a superb place to while away the miles while being serenaded by the classic straight-six under the bonnet.

THE EXTERIOR

While the hot Arizona climate and salt-free roads did wonders for this Mk2’s structural integrity the same couldn’t be said of the paintwork and after decades in the Arizona heat the Jaguar’s exterior was a little scruffy. No more though as it has been treated to a full strip down and a glass out respray and consequently the Jaguar now presents in nigh-on pristine condition.

The owner is keen to work on his cars and one of the best ways to get to know a car is to strip it down to its constituent components and with the help of a friend he stripped it down to a bare shell – bar the engine – prior to its respray. It now looks utterly resplendent in its new paint which has a virtually flawless finish. The panel gaps are tights and consistent and the paint itself has a deep shine to it. In short, it looks sublime and many ‘non-car’ people stopped to compliment us on its appearance while we were taking pictures.

The chromework is in excellent order, having been replaced, polished or refurbished while new window and glass rubbers and felts surrounding the windows have been replaced. The wire wheels appear to be in good order and the tyres have plenty of tread.

From what we could see of the underside of the Mk2 it appears to be in very good order.

THE MECHANICS

On the road the Jaguar performs very well with a deceptive turn of speed and the owner reports that the overdrive function is fully operational. The American owner of the Jaguar reported that the engine was rebuilt at some point in its life but it has not been refreshed as part of its UK restoration. It has been thoroughly checked over and serviced of course and the way it starts on the button hot or cold combined with a smooth idle and decent performance suggests the 3.8 is in fine fettle. The owner reports that it is a matching car.

As detailed in the history and paperwork sections the Jaguar has been treated to extensive works which include new suspension bushes and shock absorbers, the brake disc and calliper upgrade and the power steering conversion. All the work appears to have been carried out to a very high standard. It has a new galvanised fuel tank and a stainless-steel exhaust, the latter sounding suitably tuneful without being excessively loud.

Under the bonnet the Jaguar appears to be in excellent order and electronic ignition has been fitted to ensure turnkey operation.
